Hey Guys,
Last summer I bought an OKBG so I could go diving while my boat was being repaired and it just occurred to me I could do some other stuff with it as well.  (I'm a slow thinker)  Searching the net has brought me here and I'm wondering if there are any Medford guys here and also do you guys ever float the Rogue or Applegate with you're kayaks?  Or how about chasing smallies and steelies in the Umpqua?  I know I've seen a kayak fisherman in Brookings--he was trying to take over my secret spot.

Welcome Harry,

There are some guys in the Coos Bay area that are hitting the ocean pretty hard these days.  I think they do eventually come in land a bit for smallmouth.

I'm hoping to get a group together to fish a central Oregon lake at some time.  I'd really like to try Cresent or Odell for some Mackinaw (Lake Trout).

Welcome, Harry

I've heard talk that Umpqua smallies are definitely on the agenda for south left coasters. I also want to do some yak fishing along the Boardman State Park coast. You're always welcome (as well as anyone else) to join me.

Yea I'm ready to go pretty much anytime I guess.  I haven't done any rigging on the boat yet but maybe in time.  The ocean is a bit rough today and for the immediate future I think.

I've never taken a kayak down a river before and the prospect of trying to fish and row at the same time has me wondering how you guys do it.  I was never very good at it in a drift boat and ultimately it's the reason I sold it;  nobody wanted to row!  I've been searching for write-ups on this this but so far I haven't found anything.  I suppose I need to rig up an anchor of some sort for starters.  Seems to me like it would be better to have two oars and oar locks in a river.  No?

The prospect of landing one of those big Umqua steelhead in a yak sounds exciting not to mention a 30 lb Rogue chinook.  Or how about crappie in that lake over by Stone Ridge golf course?  I heard there was tons of them there.

Welcome Telsta, From Coos Bay here. Fished the Umpqua once for Smallies, up by Scottsburg. It was early in the season and caught only small ones but it was fun.

I also want to fish the cape Blanco area south one of these days, we will have to try to plan a group trip sometime.
See ya on the water..

Welcome Telsta,

I lived in Medford for about 12 years, but never did any kayak fishing there.  Seems I heard of someone who floats the Rogue from Shady Cove down to Bybee bridge, though I can't say what the water is like.  You do have a couple of nice lakes in Howard Prairie and Hyatt.  Caught trout and bass in both.  Emigrant lake would be another, closer alternative.  I did fish salmon on the lower Rogue (Brookings) in August from a boat.  That seems doable from a kayak.  Denman wildlife area also has some ponds you might check out.  Have fun and Good Luck!
