I heard from a buddy of mine that sturgeon like to suck shrimp outta the bay.  He also said that during low low tides the trenches tend to only have keeper sized sturgeon crusing the shallow water.  Sounds like an opportunity to use a kayak to get into some keepers.  I have no idea as to when the fishing is legal, or even any good though.  ???

I have had my best success with the yak during minus tides.  Fish the "deep" holes in the channels (often not that deep) Had my best success with Mud shrimp  (not ghost shrimp), I often like to use the crawly  critters that show up when you dig clams.  The yak works great as you can slip or even drag the boat into spots that powerboats can't get into unless they show up before the tide drops.  I like the spots where multiple small feeder channels run off the mud flats into a larger channels.  I have only fished out of the yak a half dozen times in the bay but have used the sled for years.  I launch the yak off the road out to Cape Mears as it gives you the shortest paddle to good water.

This makes good sense!

How far up the bay do the dino's tend to travel?

clear up the tillamook river tidewater and, I assume, the lower tidewater stretches of other rivers (trask, wilson).  Saw one caught a few years ago below the hospital hole by a guy bobber fishing for fall chinnook.  There is plenty of bank access (potential yak launches) on the lower tillamook river where people fish for sturgeon.

Sounds like a NWKA Sturg event looking for a time to happen!   :headbang:

There a plenty of places to camp down in that area for sure.

If you are looking for a exciting local for a sturgeon event, the columbia estuary near Astoria in June would be the place to be.  Tillamook can be spotty at best, Astoria can be off the hook when the fish are cooperating.  Tons of camping at fort stevens with a bunch of places to launch yaks nearby.  Its on my list with the yak one way or another.  I have gone at least once a year with the sled since I can remember, we call the drive back to PDX after a long day of fishing the "DRIVE OF DEATH" since it is so hard not to fall asleep at the wheel when every one is worn out :o

Now you're talking!
I tried it once last summer and let me tell you, 3.5lbs was not enough anchor.  I've since added a couple of pounds of chain but I'll still be packin some back-up lead in case the current gets too heavy.
