New to kayak fishing. Anyone fishing in the salt around Neah Bay or the coast?

We held a fishing derby in Neah Bay in 2006. I'm not sure anyone has been back since.

Welcome to NWKA KK. Every now and then some of us head out that way to fish but it's a looooong haul. I figure on average the fishing is better in OR and ends up being a shorter drive so usually head in that direction. I really would love to spend more time out that way though.

Do you normally fish out there? Where you located?

I've done well out there, on the straits side. The butt in my boat, in my avatar, came from that area. If you search the forum, I'mm sure you'll find some old posts.

The coast has not been explored very much, IMO. Access is tough. If you want to launch off of Hobuck Beach (red spot in your sat photo) there's more protection to the the north or south.

I have an 33' offshore boat and I have fished the area before. Just a few hundred yards off the beach in 90' of water I have caught nice ling, rockfish and cabezon. I have 3 kayak and need to put them to use. I was planning on watching the swell reports and watching for a flat day. Just jigging mostly C&R. Is there a forum spot to post planned kayak trips? Didnt see any kayak at the boat show in Seattle.
The red dot mentioned in my photo is just on the beach in front of the parking lot there.
Just got back from Venice Louisiana fishing. Sorry no kayaks.

Didnt see any kayak at the boat show in Seattle.

Since it's a boat show the clientele is a little different than kayak buyers. So not too many kayak manufacturers / retailers show up. There were two retailers that sold boats and kayaks and were at the boat show. Ballard Inflatable and Hobiecats Northwest. I actually had my fishing kayak set up reppin' NWKA and talking kayak fishing. I even had two kayak fishing seminars. Sorry you missed us. There will be a few more throughout the year and will keep everyone updated.

Harold, we met at 2008's Boat Show, right?

Trips are usually planned in the regional forums.

I was kind of thinking of heading out to Neah Bay in April.  The Bottomsounders spearo group has a trip planned for April 17,18 & 19.  Straights butts should be open by then too.  But who am I kidding, I don't have any free time right now, and probably won't until June.

BTW, I heard something about the Hood Canal bridge closing May 1 to June 15.   :(

Lings don't open in MA4 until April 16, so I wasn't in a rush. LaPush (MA3) opens March 15 so that's another option. The handy thing about MA4 is that it's possible to find protected pockets (along the straits) during otherwise marginal conditions.

We mostly post planned trips under the appropriate regional forum.

The wahoo was from the Gulf?

Welcome to a great group of folks, Harold.. that's a Gulf coast King Mack, you're holding up, right?  i missed the last few years fishing for them near the oil platforms.. good way to break the winter and early spring fishing doldrums...

a 33 footer and 3 yaks???.......that sounds like a good combo for a mothership company startup or a coastal guide service. bearing in mind that skill levels for your clients can vary wildly, how rough can it get there?

Nope.  That's an ono/wahoo for sure.

Allen I think we met at the 2007 show,
Another fishing buddy emailed me a few good links for surf watching calm conditions. Both links are great. I see from the webcam today was not a good day.

Kwiksatik kayak MA4 area dosent really mellow  out til sometime around late april. The best thing to do is call Jake out at snow creek resort and ask if the conditions are approachable by kayak, or just ask him if he has his docks in the water yet cause he dosent put them in until it settles down for the season.
Do you live in the Sequim Port Angeles area? Black mouths are running good here right now. About one fish for every 2 anglers. Out of Freshwater bay between bachlor rock and salt creek in 100' to 150' of water. took 2 just off the rock, well took one and lost one. Paddling is still a work out though.
Claming is good though.
you can launch out of Olsens and motor west to some good areas. Although I don't think you might be hauling that 33' much huh. have you done any albacore trips? that would  be fun.
Good luck

Nice wahoo.  I've caught a few like that in the Bahamas.  Tasty too.  Welcome.
