The weather was conspiring against us for fishing at Sunset or The Abyss today so PNW, southcoastpaddler, steelheadr and myself drove the hour, through rain and snow showers to Port Orford to small swell and relatively easy surf launch. The waves weren't that big, but i was a little nervous having never really done a surf launch before. It was no big deal actually since it was juts one little wave and was easy to time the launch, no huli's..

It was almost sunny for a second as we pedaddled south towards the best looking rock outcrops. We fished that area for a while, Zac massacred the blacks casting into the kelp beds. Paul caught a couple decent blacks and i managed a good Cabbie jigging the bottom near a exposed rock. Jay didn't have no luck, no matter how hard he tried in that area..

after about 45 minutes or so a nasty squall blew in, must have been 25 mile an hour wind at least so we slogged back to the jetty getting pounded by saltwater with every dip of the tip of our yaks. Took twice as long to get back.. The squall blew out as soon as we got there.

We fished the jetty for a while and wrangled a few blacks on the light line. Jay didn't have a proper pole for casting so i let him use my light liner and he finally got a fiesty little black that swallowed the damn jig, finally getting off the skunk. Another squall came roaring in so we beached it  and packed up the beach as snow started falling..

It was cold and wet, but it was a fun adventure. I never took my camera out of the drybag, so no pics, didn't want to ruin another not waterproof Camera
See ya on the water..

I am so happy you guys got your lines wet. When I saw the 12 ft swells being forecast, I thought Jay's trip was in vain. Jay, congrats on hanging in there, and I am glad you didn't get skunked. That black will be the best tasting fish you ever ate!

CBY,
I need to use/or lose a few vacation days by the end of the month. Plus, diesel is relatively cheap right now ($1.89 a gal!). So, should I head your way for "wednesday-thursday-friday" fishing?

- Karl

PS, yessnoo, you interested in tagging along (maybe use a couple furlough days)?

Thanks to Roy, Paul and Zack for showing me the ropes. Roy and I looked at Sunset later yesterday afternoon and it looked like a great place to fish...when there aren't 10-12 foot waves crashing through it. Just seeing the whole cove covered in white foam was awesome. Roy even pointed out the lair of lingzilla. Maybe next time we'll be able to search that entire area.

Zack, thanks for those blacks. They were tasty tonight.
