I don't suppose you can do the BCU progression on a SOT?

You could as long as it is "a craft suitable for the conditions of the assessment." It would be difficult unless you were comfortable edging, rolling, bracing, towing etc. It's doable for the 1 and 2 star, (flat water) but I wouldn't suggest it for the 3 star or higher. You can't use a rudder or skeg etc.

SOT's are all I really paddle anymore, so getting qualified in another craft doesn't sound appealing.  I may start taking the series and see what I get into.

I hear ya. Technically, to do the 3 star you are supposed to have trained in both kayak and canoe...I've paddled a canoe once in the last 15 years and have no desire to train in a canoe...so I just didn't mention that durring the assesment and hoped a canoe would not be present.

Being an ex-Coastie and being involved in numerous SAR calls I will say that in my "very humble" opinion NOTHING beats a EPRIB. It doesnt matter if you are in a 100' motor yaht or in a 9' Mini-X. By investing and maintaining that piece of fine equip. you have increased your odds profoundly of being successfuly found.

They are cheaper and smaller than they used to be and when properly serviced w/ make anyone on the water MUCH EASIER to locate.

I'm not condoning relying on it soley, but it sure is some great life insurance.
