New member #507 (I think...) here.  Curious where you would recommend for renting yaks for a Mother's Day paddle.  Mom has never done it before so something mellow preferred by her (or so I'd imagine).  We're in Puyallup, but I'm willing to drive wherever.

Check with Backpackers supply in Tacoma on South Tacoma Ave. I think they rent them. Also i dont know if Point Defience has started renting theres yet or since your in Puyallup you could check to see what Spanaway Lake has.

If you do go with the ones as backpackers supply.. some of the more smaller lakes that are great for paddleing are .. Spanaway Lake, and one out past me in Graham called RapJohn lake.

The hood canal kayak shop by me rents kayaks,  http://hoodcanaladventures.com/rentals.html

it is a long drive but the canal is pretty and on a good day a easy paddle

Thanks for the responses.  The Hood Canal area is a good call, haven't been out in that area in years.

How is the Point Defiance area for tides/currents?  Last time I was out there hiking around seemed like there was a bit of a current.

Just adding the beta for any future searchers.  We ended up renting from Agua Verde up near the cut/UW police station.  Pretty cheap rentals, $15/hr for singles and $18/hr for doubles.  Great service by the UW crew team working there (though I'm biased as I rowed there for a bit).

I don't know why I didn't think of Aqua Verde ... nice place to rent close to the arboretum.

Not sure why I didn't think of it either!  I always remember their food, but never their kayak rentals.
