Yak fishing inside Yaquina Bay?

Sargeslaughter's post on Yaquina Reef and the NOAA chart brought back many memories of fishing inside the bay from shore: pile perch from near McClain Point, wonderful flounder fishing in late winter on the north flank of Idaho Point; striped perch and greenling from the groins on the south jetty. Anyone out there noodling around inside the bay for some great-eating smaller fish? Seems like some really fine kayak territory, and no need for Bonine.

You should maybe give poke-polling a shot. It works really well for what you're talking about.

Fishboy, could you PM me with more info on the flounder fishing? I'd really like to try catching some of those!

Dave: We used to put out sand shrimp an hour before high tide on the tip of Idaho point, and you could watch one pole after another get a fish on as the flounder fed by through about an hour after high. Don't know it this is the case any more, but it apparently had something to do with the timing and quantity of the herring spawn.

Not anymore.  I've lived here for years and have never seen anything other than a few bass, bullhead, baitfish and the salmon and steelhead that pass through.  No more flatfish due to pinnipeds.

I am very sorry to hear that. Those flounders were plentiful, a lot of fun to catch, and great eating.

Still plenty of good clamming and some big chinook in Aug/Sep/Oct off the LNG tank.  Troll lures just outside the casting distance of the bankies.

I heard Sand Lake estuary has flounder in there, and I've never seen a sea lion in there.  I plan to try it out sometime.

I'd be game for a Sand Lake adventure.
