I have chatted with Alan Tani recently online regarding reel prep and took his advice.  Today I went through my reels again giving them proper lube for salt.

So, after a day in the salt and your heading home.   What is the better way to preserve a fishing reel after salt exposure?   So far, I have rinsed the begeezes out of my reels with fresh water, and dried them.

Would pulling the reel off the rod and soaking in a container of fresh water during the ride home be a reasonable option?  Or would this be risking failure by drowning?   :-\

If you talk to Alan Tani too much he'll have you replacing all your line everytime you come off the water.

I hit mine (rod and reel) with the garden hose (light mist setting) when I get home or if there is a hose/shower near the beach  I try to take advantage of that.  After that, a bit of WD-40 when I get home.  A couple times each season I take the reel apart and service it.

Yeah, I read that somewhere from him.  He only does this to the spools that have mono on them, as he refer's to it as "Cheap".
I'll be replacing mine only when it needs it.

The volume of rinse is all I am focusing on at this point.  The routine maintenance is fun stuff, and I'll probably come up with some silly schedule based on time or use.   ;D

I fill up a bucket with fresh water before I head home and dunk as much of my gear as I can 2 or 3 times to rinse as much of the salt out before it dries. When I get home, I rinse/dunk everything again and hang it to dry. I open the reels, dry them out and then relube the bearings.
