Little on the late side...
So we all were pretty successful in getting to the beach pretty early. After a little confusion on meeting up we were out on the water shortly after six I believe. That gave us plenty of great fishing time before the wind picked up. I headed straight out side and almost immediately managed a 30" ling and a few rocks. Brian showed up shortly after that and we were in a pretty consistent bite for the whole morning. Plenty of large blacks, a few underlings, and a little bit of variety with some orange rocks. I caught a nice fat yellow eye and a good sized canary I believe. Brian said he caught a small china in addition to a few other bright colored rocks that had to go back. I ended up landing a chunky cab after I thought I was snagged. He either wrapped me up immediately or picked up my jig right after I pulled free. Whatever happened, he was a good 24" and really scrappy. He was kind enough to give me a nice shower to cool me down once I had him alongside.  :D I manged a second keeper ling that was 26" at a little past 10am. Shortly after that Brian and I decided to head in and meet up with Craig and Jay who were hanging out just south of the rock. Spent a little time hanging out there and catching a few more blacks, we started heading in. Almost immediately after we started heading in the wind started picking up. Swells were very friendly, plenty of dory boats.
Overall it was a great day. Plenty of fish outside the rock, great weather, great company!

Wow! That was a GOOD day! You guys rocked! (literally). PC is really sweet when it lays down into Lake Pacific. Wish I was there.

I was sure that the dory was going to have a hard landing at that point. The water was only about 2 ft deep in front of that wave. Luckily for him, it was just enough to come down without breaking anything.

Yep, it was a great morning.

The forecast was pretty much on as the winds came up by 1030 am. Jeff and Brian headed out towards the reef while Craig and I nursed our tender sensibilities in the kelp. I was having almost too much luck with the blacks and nearly every other cast was hit. I took home a limit, all between 17-19 inches and fat. Not enough for an upgrade so no photos taken. I threw back at least 1 or 2 for each I kept. Also brought in lots of baby lings but nothing legal. Brian said that I shouldn't expect to catch anything but baby lings when I was fishing in the nursery.  :o

On the other hand, Craig was struggling for a hook up. Fishing the same places I was and with the same lures, he wasn't having much luck. He needed to bring home some table fare bad and this colorful pic shows how that luck was turned around.

After that bruiser, he started finding fish a bit easier.

A nice deli lunch across the street and it was time to head home, clean car, gear and fish, then drive to PDX to pick up wife at train station. What a long but wonderful day. Thanks to Craig, Jeff and Brian for the company and conversation.

Nice job!  Missed fishing with you.  Just got back from the Grand Canyon tonight.  Did the rim to rim and back again in 22 hours and change, needless to say I'm a little tuckered.  But will be up for some salt time as soon as the ocean allows..

My turn!

What a great day, and an easy launch.  Lots of Dory's heading out when we got setup to roll.  Saw a whale spout twice just south of us. That is just too cool.

Jeff was on his first ling before I was even to the rock.  Somehow he passed me in the parking lot, so Jay and I lost 1/2 hour waiting for Jeff to show up.  Won't happen next time!   :whip2:

It was nice to have an even pair of yaks on the water.  Jeff and Brian definetely have the milage to play just about anywhere on the water.  Myself and Jay, not so muchl.  This was my 3rd time on the salt, and things are getting better.  Actually caught 5 fish and had enough meat to have dinner and still put two family packs into the freezer! Whoo hoo!  To me this is paying off the yak one fish at a time.

That brooder of a fish (12") that Jay shot of mine had more meat that 5 stocker trout combined.    ;D
My biggest was 20-3/4" long and thick.  I ate half this sucker for dinner!

Ran into an old fart fishing from a surfboard.  He told me that he was using light tackle and hooked into something that snapped his rod in half.  :o

Here's the pics....

Great pics from a beautiful day...Thanks for the reports... A friend of mine launches his dory there....
Please take it easy on the old fart on a sailboard/surfboard as that was how I began fishing local kelpbeds in 1962 in San Diego ;D

The old fart was very nice guy.  I have much respect for folks like him.
Looked like he was float'n on a fishing kayak retro style.  :icon_rr: :hippy2:

That's also what started me down this road.  It takes some serious balls and stamina to fish that far out on a surfboard!

Nice pics guys!

Wow! Thanks for all the great photos and the youtube clip. What an inspiring day. I would sure love to arrange for an ocean that flat when I finally make it to the salt.
