I saw this on YouTube a couple of days ago and am wondering if anyone could think of any drawbacks to this design? I'm looking at making one of these with a larger reinforced milkcrate.

I personally think that the idea is pure brilliance!

This particular model suffers from the following..

Higher then necessary center of balance,
Very narrow wheels
Low clearance.

The tennis ball bushings however are a nice touch.

Thanks, bsteves. I was wondering about the clearance and the narrow wheels. I'm hoping to combat the wheels and center of balance with the larger crate turned lengthwise to open up the width to 19" from the estimated 13" on a standard square milk crate.

The clearance will be a problem but I don't see myself using this for more than going from the parking lot to the dock or well-worn trail. I'm sure the standard Harbor Freight 10" pneumatic tires will be fine for what I have in mind.

If you're just going to be going over hard smooth surfaces all the time, this crate should be fine.

If you find a need to roll over some soft sand, start saving your nickels for a set of Wheeleez.

Those Wheeleez are sweet. One of these days I'm sure I'll upgrade.

Bigger thicker wheels would help.

30 cm Wheeleez wheels sell for about $50 each for PVC and a bit more for an upgrade to polyurethane.

If you really want to get crazy they even sell 49 cm polyurethane beach wheels for about $120 each.

If you don't mind them being ridiculously heavy, you can get some fat wheels (3-4" wide, 12" tall) at Harbor Freight tools for 10-12$ each.  But they have a steel rim and weight 5-6 pounds each.

I bought a set of Wheeleez (with the black tires w/ treads) for mine though... they do work very very well.

I've got a set of the Harbor Freight wheels I'd happily give away.
