got up bright and early and headed up to the n. sound for some pinks - me and angela (my other half)

interestingly enough, i didnt check my VHF radio before leaving, figuring - how bad could it be - we get out by mukilteo and the wind is BLOWING and the waves are looking good too - but hey, we came to fish and we are prepared

turns out, the swells were pretty dang high - at times, angela couldnt see me - at anyrate - we modified our fishing techniques and just decided to jig and stay relatively close to shore and wait things out so to speak  -

all of a sudden i hear a strange sound, look over and angela is in the water and the yak is completely upside down - i was shocked...good thing we had wetsuite/pdf/and had practiced getting back onboard in 80 degree lake samamish

she immediately grabbed the yak, the paddle was attached via leash,  and got the boat flipped over and back on board in a few minutes time - she had to negotiate the wind and swells but did fine

turns out, she was doing some awkward reach to the side and back and a wave hit her at the exact wrong time

we lost a throw away rod/reel - other than this, no harm no foul and good lesson learned  - we kept fishing

didnt catch any fish - very very slow - it was cool to be in the rough sound like that to get an understanding of what the boats can handle

i wish i knew how big those waves were - at times they seemed at least 3-4 feet, but i'm really just guessing

Glad everything worked out ok.

Head high waves are usually about 3ft.

I bet it feels good to know that you can go out, fall off, get back on and keep fishing and having fun. Been out in the wind a couple times myself (without my fishing gear) just to see what it's like. In general I think the boats are much better than we are. :)  Chris

I am very glad it all worked out.  Good on y'all for taking it all in stride and then keeping going.  I've fallen off once.  What was astounding was how fast and unexpected it was.  One second on, the next second off - no warning.  It was a very good lesson.

That's the one.  Gets 'em every time.

Happy to see all come out ok.

I think it's time to name that move. It almost inevitably ends up in a unscheduled bottom inspection.
Glad y'all were ready.

I'm thinking of calling it The Wali.   I can see it now ... "I Huli'd because I Wali'd".

tell ya what - we were both super glad we took a couple of paddling classes and practiced geting off/in the boat -  turning the boat over is a bit tricky if you don't know "how" - its simply a matter of knowing how and getting familiar with these things - the one thing the instructor told us over and over is - always grab the boat immediately - always...

Glad it all worked out and super glad you guys knew how to self rescue. That stretch of water can get pretty turbulent on big tide swings.
