I have tomorrow off from work, and am thinking of heading to Pacific City in the morning. Conditions look ok, not the greatest. it may be a game day decision in the early morning. Looks like it gets better later in the morning. Anyone else thinking of PC tomorrow?

Update, made it out report upcoming...

I want to say I'd like to, but I need to actually work at some point this week ::)

Have fun, it looks like it is going to be a little bumpy

Made it out to Pacific City, Arriving at 8ish this morning. Not too bad on the surf, launch was easy. My interpretation of the surf forecast indicated swell height was supposed to subside. Well, forecasts are simply that, predictions.

I had a different game plan, this being my third time out in the salt. Perhaps everyone else already dose this, but instead of lead I decided to try a 3oz crippled hearing jig as my weight. My first drop down led to a five minute snag with the bottom. I was questioning my new strategy. My second drop down, after clearing the snag ended up with a big hit about two seconds after hitting bottom. My first fish of the day was a keeper cabazon, on the hearing jig. I had renewed faith in my game plan. Two more quick black rocks on the hearing jig within fifteen minutes, then nothing for a while. I decided to paddle back to where I started the drift and see if it would work again. It did, my rig never hit bottom every time before I had a fish on.

Here's a double.

I now had six blacks, and the cabazon, all within about fifty minutes of dropping the first line (snag) down. Conditions however were changing fast. That darn "forecast" was not holding true. No wind or wind waves to speak of, but the swell was getting big. I decided it was time to boggie back to the beach, with plenty of fish for less than one hour's fishing. The waves were now big in the surf zone, and there were actually surfers in the boat launch area. Here I go and HULI!! I have now been baptized. However my planning was good enough to prevent a yard sale. I caught up with my upside down  yak about the same time the ODFW fish checker met up with me. She weighed and measured all my fish, and I was on my way.

Be legal...

well, go add your name to the list in the "huli club' forum... seems it's a growing thing with even our intrepid and illustrious founder, polepole joining us in the past few months.
at least you had the presence of mind to make sure everything was secured, and you didnt lose the fish..

.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

I was back in, loaded up, and on my way to the fish cleaning station shortly after 10am, as the surf continued to build. I was pretty stoked with my catch, and to be back on land.

Not too bad for an hours work...

Great job!  Welcome to the huli club. should be the first of many (if your like me ::))

Thats my rockfish game plan, two shrimp flies and a 3 oz iron on the bottom, works everytime! My record is 7 black rocks in under 15 minutes.  Are you fishing a treble or a single siwash on the iron.  Go with a single 4/0 or 5/0 siwash (offset the hook for better hookups) and your snag problem will go down 90%.

I was using a treble. Came on the jig I bought during the GI Joe's liquidation. May be the best $0.75 I spent during that sale.

Nice catch :)

And welcome to the Huli club.  We should give the ODFW checker a camera to record us coming in - she has been there on two of trips that I have taken, and was there for my huli.

Nothing like rockfish for some good steady action. Congrats. That's a nice fish taco feast.

Here's a great article on surf launching and landing by kayak fishing writer rockstar Paul Lebowitz. http://www.kayakfishingzone.com/howto/safari.html
