Well I finally decided to give crabbing from my Yak a try. Head out to the mouth of the Salmon River 2 hours before high tide. I had concerns about dealing with the crab pot, how to handle the crabs once I got them on board. As you can see from the pics, I ended up with a lap full of angry crabs. But everything worked out great. Pulling the pots was easy, yak was very stable. Dealing with the crabs was not a big problem, they just wanted to get back in the water and I had to pick out the keepers. There were lots of crabs, most females and small ones. Kept 4 with nice hard shells. Tried for a salmon  but not luck, did not see any fish caught. This was my last trip in Oregon this year, we will be heading to Florida right after Labor Day. Thanks for all the help and Info and thanks Roy for showing me Sunset Bay.

Beautiful piece of land and weather there. Crabs aren't bad either. ;) If you do go grabbing, or lobster hooping in FLA straddle the yak when you've got the pots aboard. It keeps you more stable and don't have to worry about crusties pinching your legs.

Hey INSAYN, here's the answer to your question! LOL!!  :D
Yeah, that place is nice! I image that the mouth area might be outstanding for salmon pretty soon. It seems too shallow for the PB's to get out to the mouth there, or at least it was when I was out there. Where there any out there that day AKDave?

Yaknitup, there were 3 or 4 jet boats out just inside the breakers. I did not see any fish caught that day

Nice shots Dave!  That has to be one of the most picturesque places in Oregon.

Trolling there is a nightmare when the fish are in!  It's like being on a Merry-Go-Round with 2 to 3 overlapping rings and ocean swell thrown in just for grins.  I don't know how all the prop boats manage to avoid the crab lines at the mouth.  Still though, it's better than trying to fish the 101 bridge area from the bank.  At least people don't pull guns on you at the mouth.  (No, I'm not kidding)

No kidding!

AKDave, I was just chatting with Yaknitup about this area just two days ago.

Looks like a nice area to play in, and you confirmed it.  Thx!

Yeah, I've heard bad things about bank fishing on the Salmon.

The good news is that from the ocean to the 101 bridge, there really isn't any bank access and the launch is very easy. Around the bridge, as Spot said, it can be bank combat fishing at its worst!

I have fished that out of a powerboat many times and it can be great fishing if you time it right.  the potential exists for some great yak salmon action.... soon ;)
