Yakitup and I had been bouncing around where to fish today, we considered PC or Depoe but weren't sure how the forecast was going to shake out (the ocean ended up being glass ::)). So with the ODFW allowing us to keep a wild coho in Nehalem (for the time being) we decided to give it a shot. I figured short of Bouy 10, it would be the best spot to put a salmon on the deck. I have had plenty of success in the Nehalem in the past so if the fish were there I felt we had a good chance to make something happen. Launched around 7:30 and spent the day trolling in the upper bay from Wheeler down to above the state park ramp.

I hooked up first, but lost it after a couple head shakes and a screaming run on the surface. I straightened my gear out and got back on troll just in time to see Yaknitup go bendo on a nice fish.  He had it up to the boat but it spit the hook yakside.  We both get back on troll and Yaknitup wires another one, this one makes it to the net and a wild coho goes on his tag! His first salmon!  Congrats!   I leave the net with him, while he deals with his fish, and paddle off to take advantage of the hot bite.  50 yards latter I have one hang itself and I get it up to the boat, but no net!  A nice PB'er tried to help but yaknitup saved the day when he showed up with the net and the second coho of the day hits the deck.  Both back on the troll again, fish jumping and rolling around us, I have another one fold the rod over but it doesn't stick.  Half an hour or so goes by and another coho decides to cooperate, and I bring a hatchery coho to the net.  We paddle hard though the tide change but no more takers.. We paddle back to the ramp, arms burning, all the while coho rub it in our faces, jumping all around us.  Great day on the water.  Thanks Yaknitup for the company and help with the net!  Great way to start the fall "yak" salmon season.

Good report. I'm going to be down there for the next three days. Were they both nates and what were you using?
None of us is as dumb as all of us.

Next friday I will be hitting Depoe early in the AM to catch a few rockfish for the curry dinner.  Anyone is welcome to join me.  Might give ocean coho a go once I get enough rockfish.

That was a fun morning for sure. Got a GREAT workout in! That hour long bite was a blast and went quick! There were a decent number of PB's in the area and we were out fishing most of them.
Thanks to PP for hookin' me up with some chrome! He really makes it seem easy!
I have some pics that I'll get up here tonight.
