I was wondering if it is better to go with a full dry suit or opt for a dry top and bottoms?

You can do dry top & waterproof/breathable waders, or a full dry suit if you want to stay totally dry while immersed, with a dry top being the driest/safest/most expensive.

top and pants will not keep you dry while immersed. dry tops with pants only work in closed cockpit SIK's where you roll up when capsized, and they don't work that well. if you swim, you're pretty much soaked.

I think you meant to say a dry SUIT being the driest/safest/most expensive.

I went with the Kokatat Goretex drysuit and bought it using my birthday discount at Aldercreek (20% off I think). Currently, they are offering a 20% off one item coupon.  I know that price can be a determining factor for some, but I looked at it as "is my life worth the money?" I figured it was.   I am not saying you will die if you fall in without a drysuit, nor am I saying that the waders dry top combo is a bad decision. Many here on this site prefer it for comfort and price. I just like to err on the side of safety because I have finally figured out that I am mortal  ;). Also, I get to fish so little these days, I didn't want to have to cut a day short by becoming cold, wet, and uncomfortable.  I like to sea kayak as well and figured if I was doing long distances over open water where a rescue (if needed) may take longer, the dry suit would be much safer. The drysuit is only a couple hundred more but had a great warranty through Kokatat. Plus, its made in America.

Another thing I have noticed is that whenever I try to economize, I am happy at first, but a year or two later, I end up wishing I would have bought the item I really wanted in the first place.  Then,in the long run it costs more.

You can also find smoking deals in the basement of Andy and Bax's on cosmetically blemished OS System drysuits made in Scappoose, OR (I believe).  They had some several months ago, but I have not been there since so I am not aware of what they currently have.
