SPOT is obsolete

first heard about this in the electronic version of kayak angler magazine. sounds like a good idea, but then again, i think it's reinventing the ACR EPIRB.

oh, and this thing is NOT for the faint of wallet. it starts retail at $570.00!!

So what do all of those people who purchased the old SPOT systems do now?

The old Spot still works.

I read the release on this as soon as I saw it announced at CES. Just a GPS map with Spot for the most part. As much as it touts being able to send messages to other users, that's gonna be more than a PITA than using a cell phone.  This thing doesn't even have a number pad! As much fun at typing as a Nintendo...

I'll wait till they come waterproof, floating, and with a full qwerty keyboard...

yehp, Isaac's right. honestly, if you have a gen1 or two SPOT, i'd stick with it. this new one might not pan out for the reasons he stated..

honestly, think about it.. if you are exposed, hypothermic, and clinging to your boat or trying to swim for it, wouldn't you just want a single button activation ??
