Dang! Surf is 22 feet out there right now, and its raining a flood, although the wind has dropped for the moment.

Forecast is for the swell to drop down to 12 to 13 feet on Saturday, and the swell angle to swing to more from the W than the NW, and the winds may be OK if they swing from W to SW. The forecast looks like it could get back to the "iffy" stage of user friendly.
However, its looking very huge and gnarly out there right now and I wouldn't even want to be out there in a C.G. lifeboat.

I'll probably end up going lake fishing somewhere if it doesn't tone down out there enough. I don't need to scare myself as badly as I used to when I was younger.

Yesterday I did a "yard check" of the properties i take care of, and all the lawns needed raking and mowing, so I have now entered the Spring lawnmower races....racing against time so that I can get some free days for fishing!!!! :'(

I'll keep watching the Jetty conditions so I won't miss any window.

I've been working hard at imagining the conditions to get better for yak fishing the Jetty tomorrow, and it seems to be working. Swell is dropping back to only 12 by tomorrow, and swinging to a better angle, and the wind looks like it is going to be lightening up and blowing from the right direction.
Water temp reading is now only 49 F, but I'll be wearing a 5mm surfing wetsuit, surf booties, and windbreaker, if I go out.
I was looking at the surf in Half Moon Bay yesterday afternoon, and there was a consistent, slow-breaking little mushy peak out in the middle of the cove that backed off a little after it broke. Looked like a good place to start practicing my kayak wave-riding skills. It only breaks like that when the swell is huge, like it is right now, though.

Still gnarly out there, but I am trusting the forecast, and I'm going to get my gear ready for tomorrow's assault! At the very least, I will be ready and looking at it (not TOO early...after coffee and a good breakfast, anyway) so that if the conditions are sane out there, I'll be good to go!

I'll post whatever it is I do or see.

Always! Its still a little large out there right now, and a bit gnarly with a 15 foot swell, but the wind has dropped down some. I'm going to head over to Westhaven at about 9 am and look at it again. I think it's going to be mellowing a bit as the day progresses. I'm shooting for a couple of hours of fishing through the high tide (11:15am approx) and heading in before the max ebb kicks in.
There was surf breaking inside of the fishing zone yesterday, and large sloppy waves all over Half Moon Bay. It has subsided a bit already, and I'm hoping it shapes up.

I have all kinds of jigs and soft plastics, as well as some sandshrimp that I punched out of the tide flats yesterday afternoon. I got hailed on while getting them. Ahhh, Spring! Gotta go!

I watched it for about two more hours, until high tide, and the swell and wind were still a little on the lumpy side of things. No other yak anglers in sight or scheduled to arrive. I could have paddle out and survived the conditions, but it didn't look like fun or easy fishing. I didn't want to have to anchor in the lumpy gusty conditions. So I cancelled.

Swell was dropping and swinging around from 274 degrees to 269 degrees by noon. 270 is straight from the West.
Wind remained a problem, blowing 10 to 15 with gusts over 20. It swung around from almost straight onshore when I first checked it to more from the WSW, and then a few hours later to more from the SW, but was still blowing and gusting hard enough to keep me off the water. I don't like fighting the wind.

The backwash coming off the jetty rocks from the waves was making the area closer to the jetty too rough for my liking. I saw at least three dozen anglers who had hiked out there despite the gnarly conditions (binocs), and more were hiking out from the parking lot as i left.

Back home, some small squalls with rain showers came through, and then the wind seemed to drop some.   I began wondering about the conditions, so I drove back to the jetty (less than 7 miles from my driveway).
Some of those who had hiked out to fish from the rocks were returning with mixed bags of greenlings and black rockfish. I didn't see any lings, but I didn't hang out for long.  The fishing zone still looked too lumpy, and the tide was max ebbing. Not my kind of fun, any more.
I can't hike on the rocks at all now, as I'm still babying a healing Achille's tendon. Those things take forever to heal.
Swung over to the observation tower to get a good overview, then to Groins and talked to some surfers just exiting the water. They said the water was cold.

That's my useless wimped out nada report!

The forecasts looks like it might be good next Saturday. Swell is supposed to drop by then.  Until then, I have work to do, but I might play hooky and just go lake fishing!
