Ok, this is a total beginner question but i need to ask it. I see a lot of pics  in saltwater where people are holding up game clips with fish on them. On other posts i read that you shouldn't trail fish in the saltwater  because it is a dinner bell for seals/sharks etc. So please explain to me the purpose of the game clip. I just got one and a hawg trough from hook 1 today so i figure that i better know what to do with it. I will be fishing lakes and the strait. I assume in the lakes it allows me to keep the fish in the water longer vs a fish bag.
thanks, doug

1.) It keeps the fish organized
2.) Makes them easier to carry back to the cooler in your truck.
3.) Makes it easier to pose for photos with all of your fish at once.
4.) When you come in through the surf all of your fish are tethered to the kayak so you aren't likely to loose any if you wipe out.
5.) While trailing them in the water for long periods of time in the ocean might not be very wise (I still do it sometimes), having them on a game clip makes dunking them into the water to cool/clean them off while in you kayak easier.
6.) They can be used to secure and control large fish like lings and halibut.
7.) They look cooler than the cheap polypropylene stringers.

These are the top 3 reasons you need one out there.

thanks guys, you explained it well. I get my resident license in 2 days so hopefully you will see some mini fish posted on AOTY.

For a beginner like me, AOTY is a way of putting in the pot to say thanks to all the guys who are teaching me the ropes. thanks... it is much appreciated. doug

That last line you just said, is my reason for entering the AOTY as well.  I don't know jack poop about catching fish, let alone all the varity of species out there.  Theres a different rod/reel, method and tackle choice needed for each one, and that it's gunna take me time to get the minimum gear in hand and methods of fishing down, to even get close to having any luck with knowing where, how and when to fish for alot of species.   8)

That's just plain "blatant!" ::)

Myself, I'm still using a cheap home made polypropylene stringer.

Hmmmm, aren't you the guy who just wrote an article in Kayak Angler Magazine about the importance of simplifying your approach and not over accessorizing?  >:D

Me, I have no problem with mixing rocks and lings or Coho and Chinook on the same stringer.   ;)

JK on that last post. I actually keep an extra game clip just in case I get a real big fish I need to hold on to. Learned from my buddy ChuckE in Cali.

It all goes into a wet burlap sack on my Yak.
The Sea Lions are too numerous here to be dragging food behind or along side of your Yak.
I learned this after a nice day of fishing, as we entered the river and passed the Coast Guard Station where they have a derelict dock full of the beasts, I was followed and harrassed by a very large one. This is a little un nerving for me....so, I avoid it by using the burlap.
