I'm pretty sure that is NOT the John Day.  I saw this story some time ago and that version had it on some river in Texas.  And ... that's a largemouth.  John day is famous for its smallmouths.

I was thinking the same thing..  I have been down the John Day and the trees/shrubs in the background don't look like the kinds in that area?

The story is true

however

It did NOT happen on the John Day
or even anywhere in Oregon (no diamonds in oregon, period)

but, rather, on the Brazos River in Texas.  It was pretty well documented on the TX kayak fishing forum, where the guide, pictured, posts regularly.
