Finally made it down to Simpson Reef today.... Something about tens of thousands of seals/sea lions on one side and endless open ocean on the other is damn exciting on a Yak :o

Wow, what an awesome place! structure everywhere. I had to go by myself so it was a little unnerving at first, getting stalked by a huge sea lion as i got there didn't help that one bit! :-\  it seemed to go away after a few minutes and i started hooking fish so the nerves were gone quick..

Hooked something BIG.....No, HUGE!! couldn't stop it from getting to the rocks. As soon as the taught Power pro hit the reef, pop! line snapped. One of the biggest fish i have ever hooked on the Kayak. Wanted to see that one bad. :'(

It was a perfect day for doing this trip, made 2-3 mph on the way down, except when i saw a bit of structure, did a 180, dropped my rig and the first smaller Ling slammed the jig, cut the gill, tossed it in the drive well to bleed and was back cruising in minutes.

After a few hours the south wind came up so i drifted north jigging, without pedaling much at 1.8 mph. I was back at Sunset before i knew it.

Caught and realeased tons of blacks and Lings. The bigger ling went about 27 inches but was heavy. Still haven't hung a keeper Cabbie yet. Can't wait to go back here, this place  :headbang:'s !

Sunset is where that long reef extends in the distance....

Oh yea, when i was cleaning my fish there was a couple that heard a 20 foot power boat was found upside down out there this morning early. I haven't been able to verify this yet, if it's true, doesn't sound like a good outcome will happen.

These folks had a pig of a Ling, probably 20-25 pounds .

Nice looking grade of fish!  How far is it out to where you fished?

Was it the same boat that went over last week?  I know a 20ish foot boat went over last Thursday south of Newport, everyone was wearing PFDs and got picked up quickly, but the boat was still upside down and adrift on Friday when I was out on my Butt charter.

BTW, awesome fish.

Dang Roy!  Way to nut up!  I've sat up above and stared out over Simpson, wondering how the fishing would be.

Thanks for the write-up!

Do you mean how far from sunset to here or how deep?

About 1 1/2-2 miles from sunset.

way inside, couple hundred yards off the mainland, 20-40 feet of water, fished the north east side of the reef, Didn't even get to the outside of the reef. Can't wait to jig around on the outside.

: Follow up on the alleged boat incident here. We can't verify that this happened. I think these older folks might have got there information mixed up and maybe the newport incident was the one they were referring to :

Thinking back to yesterday, if that did happen here on that morning, you would think the Coasties would be buzzing all over the place.

Thanks Jason,Spot, guys.. This place is awesome!! I mean, it's just a pile of rocks, just like the pile of rocks out of Sunset it just has a different vibe to it. The conversations of the seals/sea lions echoing through the bay. The thought of a visit from the man in the grey suit invariable pops into your mind from time to time. I wish i had a better camera, could have got some great pics.
See ya on the water..

Yeah, that's gonna be a no go. I'll be up to my ears in mosquitos, northern pike, smallmouth and walleye in Quetico Provicial Park.  :headbang:
Some other time this summer though. I want to get down there for sure.

Looks a lot nicer than last week. I am up for that paddle sometime when the conditions allow again! Nice fish!
