I've come to the realization that I need to pick up a light weight top for playing in the rain.  My rain coat doesn't fit over my PFD, nor does it breath worth a dam.  I'd like something that I can wear during the rainy days just to keep my primary layer dry.  All bets are off if I fall in, and that's fine.

In the colder water fishing days like the ocean, and winter river/lakes I'm going to stick with my dry top,  but need something light with breathable water proof fabric that I can use a pseudo rain jacket during warmer water days when it is raining, or gets windy.

Anything I should avoid, or look closely at?

I'm a pretty big fan of the Marmot precip line.  Waterproof/breathable, lightweight, very packable, under $150.

My rain coat doesn't fit over my PFD

Just curious ... why don't you put the PFD over your rain coat?

The raincoat I have is too damn hot and doesn't breath, so I get just as soaked whether I have it on or not, so I only put it on when it rains.  Pain in the arse to keep pulling the PFD off to put on/take off the jacket.

That is why I am looking into splash tops.  One that will be comfortable whether or not it is currently raining during the day, and doesn't have to be absolutely water tight at the neck or cuffs.

Looking for an all in one, rain coat, wind breaker, splash top to wear under my PFD where actual water temps aren't the primary reason for wearing it.

Howz about theNRS Endurance jacket?

Looks like it would fit the bill and not overly expensive.

How about the Kokatat Tropos light Full Blast? Is has a smoothskin neo waistband so will mate w/ waders or drypants to give a little protection. Made in the company HQ right on the West coast! Kokatat repairs all seams for free. ;)

I found some good cheap stuff at next adventure's "used gear/closeout room. You buy that nice stuff you're just going to get lunker lotion and herring guts on it anyway. They normally have plenty of off brand splash wear for $25 bucks and under. Buy a bottle of Nikwax, and watch the water roll right off your back. Put NDogg on the case for you.

Another (more expensive) way to go in the rainy cold, is Pro Motion Exo top, made by the good folks up in Hood River. It has a crushed fleece liner, so all you need is a wicking layer (rashguard) underneath, and there's no need to take it on and off, unless you're drag racing. Your lucky orange hat is going to keep the water off your neck anyway.

I second that

I have a Marmot Precip I got at Joe's going out of business sale for $60 and it is pretty much the only jacket I wear around town even in the winter except when it snows then I need some insulation.

ever thought of trying a pair of frogg toggs. Very light and will fit over your PFD, but i wear my PFD on the outside still. You can mix and match from the clearence pages and get a great deal. I bought a pair of the originals from them a few years back and still going strong.

where's bsteves? he's got a really nice rain jacket from i think kokotat that might fight your requirements, Craig. he had it 2 years ago at silver lakes when we all met up.

his is light blue and had a hood, too. but why not just buy a storm cag and get over it?
