I'll be spending a week there as part of a family gathering this winter.

Besides   booking a guided trip for a day, anyone have advice on fishing in the   area or tackle to take along?

I think the place we're staying has a   couple sit on top kayaks to use...thought somebody on this site may have   fished the area before.

Thanks,
John

It's been a long time since I've been to that part of Mexico, but as I recall, there are some freshwater lagoons and mangrove canals that are pretty good for flyfishing. There are also a number of barrier coral reefs that usually hold plenty of fish and sand flats for bonefishing. I would think the potential for kayak fishing would be pretty good. Check the local fishing regulations and license/permit requirements.
The things I remember most are the spectacular Mayan ruins, most of them right on the beach. The beaches themselves are beautiful and the Caribbean is usually flat, blue and warm. Take your hats and plenty of sun screen. Pretty close to Cancun, so you will have some company most of the time.
If you get a chance and you are there during a full moon, check out the ruins at night.
