Anyone interested in fishing for kings Sunday? I finally talked my way into a job after almost 5 months of being unemployed ;D. Downside is I have less time to fish but upside is $$. Now working at Johns Sporting Goods in Everett and the reports from customers(with pics to back it up)has been great. Possession has been kicking out very good numbers mainly on the west side with fish 90-140' on downriggers. I'll get more lowdown at work today. PM me if interested.
Won't be able to respond till around 6:00pm. I'll check on areas from Edmonds to Everett, etc.

Fishnut: Bummer, I just discovered this section in the forums. I was out in area 9 on Sunday morning and would have enjoyed some expert company.

I launched from the Edmonds Marina Beach park and headed south. I fished in 120-200 feet of water trolling a bannana weight, followed by a Green UV flasher and lure recommended by my friends at Doug's Boats.

I caught one leagal Dungeness and a Sand Dab:) But the weather and the morning was beautiful.

I didn't mark all that many fish but I've never fished here before so don't know what to expect. I noticed that most other boats weren't doing all the great either and were off the water by 8. I only found one decent bait ball which could explain lack of fish - I don't know.

I had fun and that matters:)

The expereince made me curious about learning mlore about the currents and how they impact trolling speed and depth: How much more line does one let out from the target depth to account for the current depending on which way you are headed. I was wondering if I was at the right target depth the entire time. Maybe precise depth doesn't matter.

Fishnut wants to fish the same area this weekend.  You should hook up.  Fishnut's a good guy.  I'll probably be out in the area on Sunday, but it depends on how my project on Saturday goes.  If so I'll likely be somewhere around Wells Point.

Unless you have a downrigger targeting a depth can be a challenge.  If you know how much line you have out and know the angle your line is making with the water some simple trigonometry can yield your depth.  If you know how long your pull is, that is, how much line do you pull out going from reel to extended arm, you will get an approximation of how much line you have out.  For example, if your pull is 2 feet, and you do 100 pulls you have about 200' of line out.  If the line is making a 30* angle (cosine 0.5) with the water surface then you are at a maximum of 100 feet - line bow will raise that some.   If the line angle is 45* (cosine 0.7) then you are at a max of 140 feet.  The thinner your line the less line bow.

Another way to know how much line you have out is to drop your gear straight down and see it on the FF.  However, depending on your terminal gear setup you do risk tangling weight, leader, flasher/dodger, and bait.  Works well for jigging.

I was out of town this weekend and have a race at Lake Stevens. Of course I'll try to cast a line after the race.

I have a line counter reel so I guess I should brush up on my Trig.
