I just found some troubling info regarding Kayaking at Cannon Beach.  Apparently you are required to have a permit to launch, and those permits are issued that the discretion of the Chief of Police.  They have never issued one.

Here is a link to their website http://www.ci.cannon-beach.or.us/~Natural/beach.html

Does anyone here have any experience with Cannon Beach in this regard?  The Chief of Police was not in today, so I plan to call tomorrow.  I sure hope my plans to use Cannon Beach as my home port aren't shot down.

Wow.  That's just dumb.  F the police.  Paddle in the designated public recreation area.

I agree, it's just dumb.  Like I said, it may end up not being a problem once I talk to the Chief to see if they will issue permits.  I don't remember ever seeing other kayaks out there, but I'm sure I'm not the first guy to do it.  I was hoping that someone on here had some experience with it.

For years we have been required to get permits each year for our dories, but they automatically issue the permits as we are grandfathered in.

So let me make something plain. I don't like you sucking around, bothering our citizens, etonfish. I don't like your jerk-off name. I don't like your jerk-off face. I don't like your jerk-off behavior, and I don't like you, jerk-off. Do I make myself clear?

We got a nice, quiet little beach community here, and I aim to keep it nice and quiet.

Sometime it's better to plead ignorance and ask for forgiveness, than to get permission?
If it wasn't for flashbacks, I'd have no memories at all.

We fished Cannon Beach this weekend and had a blast but got our butts kicked by the surf. The current was really ripping too. Tough fishing but a beautiful day and we were definitely the freak show on the beach when we landed.

I had a pretty good talk with the police chief a couple weeks ago.  His main concern was interactions with other people in the surf (mostly swimmers), along with possible extra load for their lifeguards.  After our conversation it was clear that he wasn't issuing any permits.

However, the next day he called and after talking to his staff and the lifeguards, decided to give me permission (no formal permit) on a trial basis.  One thing he asked was that I stay out of the area from Tolovana to haystack as that is the crowded area.  I told him that I would use the access at Coos street (decent ramp to wheel down).

The key to continued use of the beach is going to be showing the city that us kayakers are not gong to be any problem.

Now you know why I didn't go last weekend. ;D  Hopefully next weekend is a different story.

We launched out of the state park area and drifted south. Landing 1/4 mile or so south of the ramp. The life guard truck came down and did a pass by and gave us a smile and a wave as fetching the my wheels from the truck.

The swell was up and it took us three attempts to get out through the surf and caught several that I crested just before they broke. Man those waves jack up! my nose would be completely in the air till my butt crested the wave then I flopped over the top. It was good fun!

Those two exposed rocks have great contours but the current was ripping at 1.5- 2mph ... tough to fish!

I don't get it?  Aren't beaches state lands?  I need to do some reading.  Stuff like this rubs me the wrong way.  Part of what makes the Oregon coast awesome is Oswald West's legacy of beach access for all.  If this shakes out to be within their jurisdiction it will be a cold day in Clatsop County before you ever see me spend another dollar in Cannon Beach.
