Hi,

I am heading out with some family and friends this Thursday to camp near Newhalem and would like to get some local info on Kayak fishing.  Not sure yet what campgroung we are staying at so I am interested in hearing any suggestions.  Where are some good launch spots? How is the ocean fishing?  Any fish going into the Nehalem Bay/river right now? Any comments/suggestions about fishing the bay/river?

Thanks,

Tomas

Not sure about fishing, but I usually launch at the Nehalem Boat Ramp near the 101 bridge.  Cheaper than the state park, and a little more protected.  About a mile to the big open waters of the bay proper.

You can launch in Wheeler, too, but I don't know the details.

Get dinner at the Rising Star cafe in Wheeler.  Place is amazingly good.

The Tillamook water trail folks have an online guide to Nehalem Bay paddling.  It's pretty good.

There's some good crabbing in the bay, especially near the boat launch in the park. Also a few rockfish near the jetty wall closer to the ocean. Fall chinook will be in soon, but can't remember if it's opening this year or not. Coho are still out a few miles offshore fattening up prior to hitting the rivers. You can almost reach em by kayak if you know what you're doing. Be safe!

Coho are milling around in and just outside the surf right now.  Hit it in the early morning dragging Coyote Spoons.

I really like Barview county park. It is not too far down 101 to the south. Lots of kayak opportunities in Tillamook bay too.
