I just got a transfer from AZ to washington and am looking to do some fishing.  I have been crabbing off Thea point and some fishing around fox island.  I have a WS tarpon 14 as my rig.  I live in UP and would like get out close to home.  I see people fishing with what looks like a gill on an inlet in Steilacoom.  I didn't know you could fish that way in washington.  The guy at the bait shop says to head out to browns point.  I thought I might try that out this week.  any ideas for a quick put in and a short drive?

Welcome to the Pacific North West Johnnybike and to the forum. I moved back to this area a year ago from Tucson, after being there for twenty eight years. Last employment, was working for Global War On Terrorism  (GWOT), out at the Silverbell Heliport. I'm a newbie to the forum and kayaking, but wanted to wish you well. There's a lot of good folks here and I'm sure you'll dig all this part of the country has to offer.

Welcome to WA.  The nets are indian.  They do not have to follow the same rules that the rest of us have to follow.

I went back today and did some reading. They have all the rules posted.  Can a person fish anywhere near the nets?  I was thinking about fishing near the inlet.  I cant seem to find and rules on how close the net I can fish.

Welcome aboard!! I too am a military man. I live down in Lacey and get out roughly 1-4 times a week depending on my sched. The inlet you are referring to is Chambers Bay. If you paddle out under the trussel you'll see a bunch of power boaters jigging in front of an old pier. You can vertical jig Point Wilson Darts out there with the crowd, and potentially pull a king. The pinks are running strong at Browns Point. This is your best shot at a salmon in the south sound right now. I've fished it 2 times so far this season with a total of 13-14 hook ups, but only a few fish to hand. Not been able to get them to stick on the fly rod for some reason ??? small pink hoochie squid on 1/4-1/2 jighead have been murderous. There was a group of roughly 5 of us there Sun, and we all consistently hung fish all day. I'm off to Hobuck for some bottom fishing the next 3-4 days, but I'll be Brown's Point bound again when I get back. I'll shoot you a message if you want to join in.

You're a few minutes away from me, I live just off of I-5 in that area.  I ended up out here after 7 years in the Army.  Join us out at Brown's Point next week!

I would be up for for anything.  My Schedule is some times a little crazy but if I can swing it, I'm in.  Just to clarify I took a transfer with REI, not the Armed Forces.  Shoot me message when you guys are heading out and hopefully I can join you.

My fault for assuming. There is a lot of military in this area, so when I see "transferred from" that's the first thought that comes to mind. We'll send you a message when we're Browns Point bound next. The pinks are really thick right now.

Like you,  I am new to kayaking, but not to fishing.  I have always found, be it in the Sound or on the rivers,
that there really is a Morning and Evening Bite.   The action generally tends to slow down a bit mid day.     If I can only free up 3 or 4 hours to go fishing,  I would definitely do so in the early morning or later afternoon before dusk.
Then again even fishing when it is slow if better than working  ;D

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

I was out most of the day yesterday at browns point.  Seems everyone was using the pink buzz bombs.  Lots of people out but no one really pulling any thing in.  Must be a popular spot.  Is there a part of the forum where a person can find the most up to date fishing information?

The place you saw the nets is Chambers creek estuary, the Puyallup indians have treaty right to those fish. Fishing isn't what it use to be there, but if you get in good with the locals, it's still a great place to hang out Bring a 8-9 foot rod, 3 or 3L buzz bombs, & some 4/0 hooks, (the trebles their sold with are not legal) & for gods sake, no braided line, unless you want to be shot! Make nice, learn the customs down there, & talk to the anglers on the beach, not the ones on the rocks.
If you're gonna launch there, don't do it during the "bite", don't fish in the estuary, unless you're on the beach, & don't fish or even hang out under the trestle.

Keep the sunny side up & the wet side down.
Good Luck & tight lines
