After taking off the spool, dunking in a bowl of water and lots of vigorous shaking later, the reel is usable again. I found using a container to fill up the reel with water and spinning the handle dislodged grit pretty well.

Immersing, spinning the handle and shaking worked has worked much better than spraying with a hose. Works pretty well, give it a whirl if the hose doesn't get all the grit.

Is it just me or does the Van Staal logo "VS" look a lot like a "$" sign?

Criag, I like how you mentioned the Van Staal logo using the pro team badge so that it ends up looking like you might be on the Van Staal Pro Team.  Subtle.   Speaking of which, they really do need a kayak angler on the Van Staal Pro Team.   How many jetty fisherman from Long Island do they really need?

Brian,
Unfortunately, I'm not that clever but I like your idea.  I was just showing it to demonstrate how it looks kind of like a Dollar sign.  I figured that was done to subliminally suggest to me to leave their sight because I can't afford one and save their band width for someone that can.   :)

However,  Van Staal reps, if you are reading this and want to sponsor a fisherman in the poor to mediocre range, I come cheap.
