I have personally seen whiteys handiwork on a stellar sea lion at the same location.  That area is definitely a sharky spot.

It's THAT time of year again.

Sightings and attacks are fairly common in Oregon.  I've seen 2 huge whites while surfing, know 2 people who've been nibbled and met someone who got F'd up bad.  I think the average is 1 "attack" per year.  Seaside, Cannon Beach, Falcon Cove and Oswald West have all seen toothy encounters with surfers.

That's why I like taking noobs out in the ocean with me.  Gotta appease the landlord with an offering.   >:D

I had my "large shark encounter" July 5th this year.  10-12 ft long, big fin, big body etc. and NOT a blue shark.  About an mile and a half off PC.  Snicker if you will but I now always fish offshore with my "Sharkshield" fully charged (although I'm not confident it would deter a determined aggressive/curious white). They are out there, and my hunch is there are more than we think.

As our coastal waters warm, they will become more common---and more dangerous.   Where's Quint when we need him???

Out of curiosity Ron, which model SS did you buy, and ballpark costs? Do you run it off your FF battery, or does it have a dedicated power source?

I bought the "Freedom 7".  I almost bought the one designed for mounting on a surf board and adapted it to a yak but I decided against it in case I ever decide to travel to sharky waters the Freedom 7 would be easier to take with me.   It comes as a fully sealed unit with a rechargeable Lithium battery inside and I've have still had it registering active after 7 hours.  I often turn it off on the way out and the way back in as at least in my mind you are more vulnerable when you are out there just bobbing around near structure (not unlike a seal/sealion) then moving from A to B.  They aren't cheap,  I paid right at $600 shipped from Southern California.   Expensive yes, but after my visit from a very large fish it was easy to spend the money.  My take on it is, at least I'm trying something to be proactive about reducing my risk, and it gives me peace of mind and allows me to feel comfortable offshore again.  I can tell you from experience that when a 12 ft shark glides under you kayak while you are offshore by yourself your checking account balance is the last thing on your mind.

I think the best plan is to just put it out of your mind. If they wanna get ya, they're going to. I suppose a bang stick would be an effective deterrent, but I think the dangers of having a firearm on a kayak are way more than from a shark. I think if the shark shield gives you peace of mind, then it's doing it's job.
Last spring, I had a visit from a 11-12ft. tiger out in deep water. Came up behind me, and actually bumped my yak with it's nose, then swam right next to my yak, I could have touched it's dorsal fin without leaning over. It was just curious though, made a circle around me and took off. They're out there, just got to make your peace with it.

The only true way to protect yourself is to stay out of the food chain. I have see sharks more than one while surfing,.  which I have done since I was 13. I think I am more worried about Jack A-- locals who think they own the ocean. But since I have CCP you never know what your going to get. The bottom profile of a surfer looks more like a seal that a Yak anyway. Has anyone ever heard of a Yak being attacked by a shark. I haven't but I have heard and seen quite a few surfers. I will just take my chances. I did a search since I have never heard of an unprovoked attack on a Yak here is what I found. http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/unprovoked_kayaker.htm

One of the NCKA guys got a surprise from a GWS last year. It left some tooth gouges in his boat and punched a few holes. I think it even took his shoe off and tossed him out of the boat.
Definitely just a shark that was curious if he was food or not and decided he was not.

If you have seen video of sharks breaching on seals you know there is not a damn thing you can do if a 1000 pound animal hits you at 20 MPH from straight below. Sharks do not feed on kayakers or there would be a lot more dead kayakers.

There are a tons of ways to die. This is a VERY unlikely way! Go out enjoy the ocean and if you see a shark don't freak out. If he wanted to eat you, you wouldn't see him.

If that freaks you out too much enjoy a local lake....
