Another shark attack on the oregon coast. Been awhile, but there have been a few sitings this month alone, and even one person that says his board rode on top of one a week or so ago...

more on the news tonight (chan12 for sure), but, for now, here's one snippet

Heavy! Glad to hear it turned out the way it did.
So, if the Landlord rubs up against you, I guess you should act like a chunk of inert drift plastic and refrain from hitting it with your paddle.
I have had seals and sea lions bump my legs before while sitting and waiting for a wave. Freaks me out every time.
I think its counter-intuitive, but maybe we surfers are safer sitting up on our boards, even with our legs hanging down, at least in GW territory. If that guy had suddenly decided to paddle and had been lying down stroking when that monster hit him like that, he  would have lost his head.

Back on Nov 1st 1979 when the late Kenny Doudt got hit by a large GW while surfing near Haystack Rock off Cannon Beach OR, he was paddling, and the estimated 15' shark clamped him to his board and ripped his back and ribcage apart. He never saw it comning. He was lucky to survive that...maybe one of the worst attacks ever by a GW where the victim survived.

This further strengthens the idea of this month being "Sharktober."
And Sharkvember is right around the corner!

Lol!  I got 4 phone calls last week warning me to stay out of the water.
2 were as I was heading home from taking the kids surfing on Friday.

There've always been sharks out there.  What's different is that there are A LOT MORE people in the water.  That's one of the reasons I don't surf as much as I used to.  My favorite times to surf anymore are on Superbowl Sunday, Christmas Eve and any time a shark attack is in the news.

Of course after the call you immediately headed back out with BIG gear and BIG bait right?

Ya think the surfers would get upset if I started chumming with drums full of slaughterhouse waste?

Probably not very funny to surfers. I thought I read about a conflict like that somewhere...

Be safe!

Are you refering to the shark fishing tournament that was held out of Astoria for a couple of years?  Yeah, surfers weren't too happy about that and I think there was even an attack during the tournament.  Didn't take long to get that shut down.

Or down here in the Bay Area where there was a big uproar over a shark diving outfit chumming the waters.
