Hey all,

I have the green light to go fishing this weekend. I am thinking of hitting the sturgeon on the Willie. If I can get some bait tomorrow I will be out Saturday otherwise Sunday. (I will update tomorrow on my success in getting bait). If you have any interest or other ideas for location or species let me know. If you want to meet up either reply to this link or fire me a PM.

I'd be happy to meet up with you on Sunday up there. I've been needing to catch me a sturgie... I'm game for whichever part of the river you'd like to hit. I might even be able to bring some bait from down here. I'll check Bi-Mart or the new Cabellas. What and how much do you want? Sandshrimp?

Hey Browneysvictim, it looks like I will be going out tomorrow (Saturday).  My wife indicated that she would prefer I go on Saturday. For those of you not married for 27 years this means go on Saturday :) Thus, I think I will head out of GR park on Saturday morning. Probably get there around 9 or so. I head upstream from the ramp. If you do make it make sure you have shoes with good traction for getting up the ramp! With the rain the moss gets slippery.

As for bait I do not think I will have a problem picking it up. I have been fishing sandshrimp and nightcralwers but as Jammer indicated in his thread the sturgeon are not all that selective. I may end up buying a couple of different baits just to test the theory.

Out of curiosity, does anyone use any of the pickled baits in the jars. I thought about keeping one as a backup for days when I can not get to the store. I was not sure if the pickling scent is an attractant or not. My general belief is that I want the bait to be pretty natural - although what a sandshrimp is doing in the Willamette I have no idea :)

I am not saying you can't catch them with the pickled squid, but I have never got a bite with that stuff.  I bought some frozen squid and will try that next time I get out.  I recently started to freeze my leftover sand shrimp, if I know they will not get used before they rot, and I had great luck with them last Sunday.

Thanks Craig. That is a great idea to to freeze what I do not use. I have just been dumping the leftovers into the water. I will need to work a little harder to keep them fresh while I am fishing if I am going to do that.

If I freeze my leftovers each time I can build up a secret stash, at least until I come home from work one day and my wife says we are having shrimp for dinner :)

We used year old frozen anchovies and shrimp scented smelly jelly yesterday on the Columbia. Saw lots of blips on the ff but only a few nibbles and one shaker landed.

The ones I used last weekend were inadvertently frozen.  The top shelf of my beer/bait fridge in the garage got much colder than expected.  Probably a good thing since they were from a couple weeks before and I had forgotten about them.  The night crawlers, on the other hand, did not fair so well.  Freezing seems to liquify them...who knew?

As for sandshrimp for dinner...Yuck!

I put mr crawlers in the fridge and the sand shrimp in the freezer. Think about it Craig.  Sturgeon are yummy. Sturgeon love sand shrimp. You are already only one step away- do not fear the reaper :)
