I can't flippin' believe it...
I have been working out 4-6 times a week since early October to lose weight and just generally feel good. On a fantastic roll--in fact I am addicted to cardio and weights again. So what do I do? Blow out my freakin' knee for the fourth time!!!!!
Nobody told me that just because I am almost 51 I shouldn't be pushing myself. Damn common sense! Never has been a strong suit of mine  ::)
Surgery 2/24...then the rehab trail. I will fish in my kayak by 4/1. I will fish in my kayak by 4/1.
I will fish in my kayak by 4/1...
Anybody have any size 12 ruby slippers I could borrow?

Ouch!

Never needed surgery (well, except for forehead reconstruction), but have had plenty of knee issues.  Hope it all heals well, and quickly.

That sucks about your knee, if everything goes well and you work hard fishing on 4/1 could happen.  My brother got is acl repaired last winter and was back at work in 2 weeks.  A few years ago I was dragging a deer out of the woods less 1 month after surgery.  Not sure what kayak you ended up getting, but if it was Hobie, fishing would be a great way to rebuild knee strength.

Define "blow out".

Was this bone fragmentation, or ligament / muscle damage?

I just had a big pile of stainless steel hardware removed from my knee on December 12th, and was probably comfortable enough to kayak fish (paddle) a week or so ago.  Today was my first day back in the (paddled) kayak since last fall.  Felt great!   Still need some leg strengthening to do before I would be comfortable peddling my Hobie in the Ocean, or big river.  My big goal is May 12th!!!

Good luck with your surgery man!   8)

I feel your pain I am 54 and had my MCL done last year. It was stiff for about 4 weeks and then it was off to the races. And don't worry 51 ain't old for a tree. ::) You will be back to it in no time.

Thanks all...
On the positive side it is not ligament damage. My meniscus (the cartilage between your femur and tibia that cushions your knee) is nearly non existent after three previous surgeries over the last 15 years. I tore what is left and there is a nasty chunk of bone or cartilage floating around in there that makes a very painful POP every time I try and turn the crank on the bike.
They are going to go in and clean it up one last time and see if it helps. Doc wanted to do replacement surgery but I want to hold off as long as I can stand it. I was getting so psyched about pedaling in the ocean!!! It will happen soon.
Enjoy your day Mr. Ling Cod...they are numbered!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Had a total knee replacement a little over a year ago.  My left knee was completely shot due to previous injuries. Also had a lot of pain associated with the knee.  Last weekend I peddled around Lake Rosinger (about 8 miles) in my Outback with absolutely no knee pain. Going on an 8 mile hike today. Just turned 50 last summer. The limits on the knee ...are running, and cutting sports like basketball, football, etc.,  The total knee replacement has been a great option for me.  Best of luck...Wayne

I'm hoping I don't have to go with the knee replacement route as I'm only 40.  On my mom's side of the family, several of my aunts, grand mother and one cousin have had knee replacements due to their similar body structure.  Fortunately, I got my fathers body structure.

I was addicted to running long distance from 8th grade - age 25ish when I really got into toys with motors.  Toys with motors go fast, bone break when exposed to these speeds.  After the plates and screws were installed in 2000 following a biff, I was unable to run due to severe pain where the hardware was.  Over the years it just got worse and I became less active and put on the chub.

Now that my kids are showing interest in running, I really miss it and want to get out there with them.  So, I was able to get the hardware removed (in Dec '11), and have the bone cleaned up.  There is some arthritis in that knee from the original trauma, as well as from the many many miles I put on them years ago.  Now that the hardware is out, and the healing is going really really good, I have made a few very short jogs (50 feet or less)  to get the feel for any pain.  I don't feel any of the burning feeling in my shin bone at all, but my patella muscles need to be strengthened to keep it in line.  Since I haven't put much activity on that leg over the years, the muscles are a bit confused and weak around the knee.  Found the proper workout machines at our in-house gym at work that I plan to use to get that leg ready for running again.

Sounds like you have been there before so you probably don't need advice from me but. When I had my knee surgery last year they gave me a gameready unit it cut my healing time in half. http://www.gameready.com/news/index.htm
