Recently I spoke with Steve from Scappoose bay kayaking.  He had talked with some folks from Texas about catching Catfish with a fly.  Well apparently they have Catfish over there in that Scappoose channel next to their store and he wants to find out if this same type of fishing is possible there.

So has anyone here on the forum ever fished for Catfish with a fly around here in the NW?  :-\  Any successfull attempts?  Is there a Fly that is more productive than others?

Steve is also very interested in NWKA and its members, so I will be letting him know more about it towards the end of this month when I go to pick up my (soon to be ordered) Hobie Adventure.   8)

Thanks!

Hmmm.  Catfish can be used for Kayak Wars freshwater points.  Might have to give it a try.

Wheres Amos when we need him? I know there are dozens of sites dedicated to catfish but i've never heard of purposely fishing for them that way.

Dont see why it couldnt be done. Have caught flatheads and blue cats on bass jigs at night so maybe a weighted streamerish or crawdadish pattern would work.  Probably best to uze an 8wt with a sink tip, you'll need that backbone.

I used to catch catfish on a roostertail on the snake river.  I'd imagine that those same fish would hit a fly if you could get it down to them.

anything Big and Ugly would be my fly of choice.

It can be done with a fly rod, but make sure you have something with a lot of backbone.  My grandpa and dad have both broken fly rods on catfish before.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

I don't think you need a heavier rod to land catfish.  I catch 10lb+ carp on a #6 and I think they fight a lot harder then a cat.

However, you may need a heavier rod to get the distance with any large flies that you may use.

Guys, thank you for the responses.  This has certainly given me some good food for thought.  I will be headed out to Steve's store on the 23rd to pick up the new ride.  :o  Very excited!!! I will keep you all posted with any new techniques I may learn from him.
Thanks Ron with GROUNDSWELL and Scappoose bay Kayaking with the help on my order.   8)
