On Wednesday May 2 at 7 PM, Ron “pelagic paddler” and I will be giving a kayak fishing presentation at the Portland CCA meeting.  This presentation is going to be a bit different than the others with more of a focus towards introducing non kayakers to the sport and the interaction between boats and kayaks.  Besides learning more about kayak fishing this will also be a great time to learn about the important things the CCA is working on like the “Protect Our Salmon Act” and banning gill nets from the sturgeon sanctuary.
Oh and did I mention that it is at the Kennedy School, which has pretty decent beer.

Right on guys! Educating the PB community is a great and important step to better relations on the water.

I'll be there to help support the kayak community and to find more information about the CCA.   After seeing the PB reactions to kayaks on the Willy last week, it will be interesting to see their reactions off the water!!

Hi everyone,

I'm excited about Ron and Nate speaking at our chapter meeting.

I hope that many of you that are experienced Kayak anglers will attend to learn about CCA and what we are all about and have been working on for the last 5 years. Learn about the things we've been working on for YOU since we formed here in Oregon and Washington.

The most exciting thing right now is that we are beginning to gather signatures to put a gillnet ban on the statewide ballot in November. This ban effects non-tribal commercial fishermen.

Show up, have a beer, and meet some new folks,

Just a quick reminder Ron and I are giving a presentation on kayak fishing at tonight's Portland chapter CCA meeting.  This presentation has a lot of timely information in it regarding how to deal with sea lions and safety precautions for fishing near boats.
In addition to the kayak fishing presentation this is a great opportunity to learn about the ballot initiative banning non-tribal gill nets in the Columbia and other important actions that the Oregon CCA has been doing to protect local fisheries.

What % of total catch is represented by gill netters vs recreational vs tribal? You're talking about killing small businesses, guys who've spent a lifetime fishing. How many are there?

Not exactly.  There are other netting systems available that allow the release of wild fish instead of killing them.

Lee is right, there is no reason to use gill nets to fish other than greed.  Seine nets accomplish the same purpose (to harvest fish) but wild fish and other incidental catches can be released unharmed.  I was at the yak seminar in Salem at the Salt Water Expo a month or so ago and will be there tonight.  Look forward to putting some faces to their postings.   Just setting up my yak, so am looking forward to seeing the yaks and how and where they are rigged for fishing.

I second what Lee and jim-dawg said.  Gill nets kill pretty much everything that gets caught in them, be it hatchery fish or native fish.  The ballot initiative will force commercial fisherman to use other types of nets that will allow them to safely release native fish and other by-catch.  It will not kill the commercial fisherman, it will just make them change their methods.
Think of it this way.  Recreational fisherman have to safely release native fish, if the ballot initiative passes commercial fisherman will have to do the same.

It makes so much sense when you say it that way. We should all be playing by the same rules when it comes to native fish.

Thanks for the explanation, I knew there were good reasons, just didn't know what they were.

Guys, thanks for the great turnout yesterday.  I know the board members were really impressed by  the kayak fishing community and our enthusiasm for the sport.
