The Winter king derby is scheduled for the 17th. Anyone here gonna try it out? I would if I could get my kayak here in time. But i doubt that will happen. My drysuit is on the way though!

My kayak is supposed to arrive tomorrow afternoon -- so it's possible. I'm hesitant about putting in the $100 entry fee for my first efforts on the Revo, especially with the derby being a week earlier than usual and the ice conditions I've been reading about on the AOD forum. Probably unrealistic, but I sure do have a bad case of fishing fever.

I was hoping to but can't make the day work. Next up is the anchor point Calcutta king derby in early may. 4 kayaks fished it last year. We even entered one fish!

I think I have it dialed in for trolling kings so I am doing everything in my power to make it work for the anchor point derby.

I should get together with you rudy some time to see how you have your kayak rigged. Im getting an outback too. I definetly want to attend that calcutta derby and its far enough away I have time to prepare.

I have a feeling there will be a few more than four yaks in the water at this year's Calcutta.  Hope work demand slow down for Rudy when the runs heat up for all of us. For now, I think I'll have to content myself with lurking on the forums and planning my assault on the Sportsman's Show.

Matt I'll send you a pic of my set up. Then maybe I can walk you through it. It's one folbe rod holder, one ram mount and a downrigger. Made mistakes on all three I can help you avoid! Lol. But they work for me!

Akfishergal, nothing would make me happier to invade in force the anchor point derby with an armada of kayaks. Once on the water we have as good of a chance as any powerboat set up. With a few pointers on gear, it's a matter of rod hours.

Maybe I can do a quick write up on how I think it should fished. Keep in mind it's just my opinion only after one season of effort. You are 90 percent equipped with just a rod holder and if you have a hobie you don't even need that though two long days of dragging a 11inch flasher will wear you out.

I'd say the hardest part of catching kings is your ability to stay on the water as long as possible. Without getting into details lets just say I think the guys have a serious advantage there. Liquid management is the key.... If I was a woman, my focus and priority would be how you plan on maximizing your time on the water. Good news is you will likely be within a half mile of the shoreline ( NOT your launch point) 90% of the time.

Are you talking about the Homer or Anchor Point Derby?  I can't make Homer but we are all looking at Anchor Point which was second week of May last year.

Hey K84, I've been XC skiing 45 days this winter and averaging 10K per outing, with the idea that building up extra core and leg strength can only be good for peddling that Hobie for many, many hours. I think I might need to spend a couple session at Bartlett practicing the gymnastic requirements of managing my relief zipper and the ..er.. device while afloat.  Yep, you guys have the advantage there.

I'm all in for making up the kayak armada!

Uh...let's see... Hmm... I've put back on every pound I lost over the summer which was 25 pounds. Advantage you! I have faith my sheer will and love of fishing will allow for a long day. Haha. Keep in mind I did all my king fishing at deep creek last spring in my mini x so the outback will be a HUGE upgrade!

Maybe you could devise like a portable Outrigger that will help stabilize you while you are doing gymnastics on water. Otherwise I think it would just be safer planning on short breaks every few hours. My experience has been if you minimize liquid intake you sweat the liquids out. But you have to drink some kind of sport drink or I cramp up towards the end of the day. The king fishing will be close to shore. I'd just plan on that. You don't want to Huli in that fast current.

Time to start hitting the gym!!!!

LOL -- I am a camel.  Good advice, of course, which I will take. I wonder how many women add the Hobie amas to their yaks for this very reason.  And also --  I doubt that all of my strength conditioning can hold a candle to your skill and determination. I'm planning to go to school on your saltwater fishing expertise a bit.  That is, if I can keep up to you in your Outback.  Good think I got the turbo fins!
