Has anyone rigged up an antenna as their flag mount so you could plug your hand held into to increase your range when fishing off shore. The possibility of being 3-6 miles off shore and getting out of range b/c of our low position on the horizon is a touch unnerving. Ideas?

I've played with the idea a few times, but never put pen to paper to actually get something working.  Seems like it should work well depending on how it's put together.  Maybe that'll be a break project I should think about.

We talked about this a bit on here this fall.. I had aspirations of doing just what you are considering but was informed by the radio head electric guru guys that the extra range gained using a "flag antenna" vers just holding the vhf was minimal.

Can't you just stand up in your kayak, hold your radio at arm's reach above your head and yell nice and loud towards the mic when you need to talk?

Wait, that won't help Rawkfish....nevermind.   :icon_jokercolor:

I'm going to put a satellite dish and a flat screen tv on my mast and some mega speakers on the amas. Can watch others catching fish in HD

Might as well, may increase my bites. Fish like vibrations, right?

I still need to get a flag set up for my Tarpon. Right now i just carry a small white LED clip light to clip on my shoulder so that I will be in compliance with the CG regs.

While that has been perfectly fine for paddling the back waters of my local estuaries and small lakes in my Ultimate 12, I will be heading out into bigger water with PB traffic on my Tarpon. I personally know a drunk (local surfer) who sometimes takes his PB out along the jetty for bottom fish. I won't fish with him or allow him in my boat, but mainly because he chooses to ignore the fishing regs. So far I haven't been on the water when he's been out, but I have heard some stories about his antics, and I've heard that he's been ticketed at least once by the game warden.
I hardly ever am on the water after dusk, and that's usually a small lake or a tidal creek with almost no PB traffic.
I'm looking for the right scrap of day-glo material that I can jury rig. Might just clip it to a spare rod in the rear flush mounts.
