I'm heading your way, starting at Sunset, with a Sport I've fished here in Texas bays, and was wondering if anyone has used AMA's up there. I've been practicing reentry and find that being an old man I'm having some trouble doing it with all the cold wx gear I'm told I'll need up there. I don't have AMA's now but am considering buying them. They'd be cheaper than a new bigger boat, and less of a problem explaining to the missus.

Welcome to the forum! What type of kayak are you using?

It's an older Hobie Sport which is a bit shorter and narrower than the outback most of ya'll use. works good in our tame, shallow water down here.

I love my AMAs but they're kind of necessary on a TI. :-)

When and where will you be coming to the wonderful PNW?

I'd wait to buy em until you come this way and fish for a bit. Hopefully with some of us and not by yourself. Then make the determination based on our waters if you need amas. We have some very calm and also some very rough conditions in the NW depending on where you're fishing, and when in the year.

I may wait then til I'm up there on the AMA's. I certainly don't intend to fish by myself til someone shows me the ropes. I've fished alot out of the yak but mostly in warm shallow water here in Tx. I have reservations at Sunset Bay from 5/31 til 6/7,as I was told that was generally a calmer water put in and fishing. I really hope to get ahold of someone when I get there, I'll need license and some help with terminal tackle, all of which I'm sure are available there or at least in Charleston or Coos Bay. I'm so damned excited to be able to try this and check off another line on my Bucket list. Hope to hear from someone who may be hitting Sunset over that weekend or the next week. My phone is 361-790-2702 and I'd like to hear from ya'llwhen I get there.

After Sunset I will just go up the coast trying any different water, including Wa as I will have at least a month to accomplish this

Assuming you're talking about the hobie sidekick ama's, I love them! Dedicated user. Really helps me worry less about kayaking and more about fishing. They are easy to install and to strike in the water. Not too expensive. Fairly durable. I say do it!

Also, if by cold water gear you mean a dry suit/waders and a dry top (which you will need) with warm layers underneath it is not difficult to re-enter the kayak if you have practiced.

Make sure you get in touch with coosbayyakker, he's the local point of contact for the Coos Bay area.

I am going to be in the Coos Bay area and was considering hitting the salt this weekend, but after looking at the conditions I have thought better of it. Perhaps CBY will be going out anyway cuz he's like that!
