Lingcod - blue meat

I've heard reference to blue lings before.  Got one with blue meat.  Very noticeable, particularly when put up against white ling meat. 

What's it mean?  I assume it's good to eat.

Whatever you do, don't eat it! It's terrible! I'll take it from you and dispose of it properly.   

It's good to eat but I don't know what causes it.

Cabezons and rock greenlings can have blue meat as well.

And what's with that blue-colored skin and muscle? That flashy hue is caused by high levels of a bile pigment called billiverdin, which causes the blood serum of the fish to be blue-green (or occasionally purplish) and which also finds ins way into the muscles. The source of this pigment (found in a number of other sculpins) is unclear...Also possible is that the color comes from the fish's diet, as some invertebrates store bile pigments from the algae they eat.

not sure if this is the same for Lingcod (no info on blue color in entry on lingcod in certainly...) but its interesting nonethless.

I read in a high profile science journal a few weeks ago that blue meat fish are right brain thinkers, and the ones that have plain old boring white meat are left brain thinkers.

The blue meat grosses my wife out, so she won't eat it if she sees me cook it.  Once it is cooked she is none the wiser.

INSAYN. I seem to catch the "no-brainers". They don't think at all and readily take what I sink to the bottom.

The lings with blue meat are from depressed stocks --please send to me and I will counsel them.

Bile? I'm not sure of that, but, of course, some folks have a much larger research budget than I...

I've noticed it most with those that still had some tentacles in the stomach...

They are a species of surf fish from the south mediterranean

Good eating and the meat will turn white when you cook it, not sure  if its true but i have heard  it may be caused by them eating alot of octopus and the ink make them blue,could be a fish story too.

Now that you mention it this one puked up an half-digested bolus of tangled tentacles and anchovies(?).
