Self rescue in mini-x

I took my mini out today. I caught a couple rainbow trout and the tiniest blue gill I have ever seen. No camera though. Here is my question. Does anyone with a mini have a hard time with the self rescue? I can get back on my trident 13 with no problem. But the only way I can get back on the mini is over the bow or stern. When I try from the side it gets to a certain point and just rolls over on top of me.  I figure it is cause of my size... But...  Thoughts?

I don't have a problem getting back into mine from the side.  I just treat it like any other kayak I'm re-boarding.  Position one hand on the far side, one hand on the side nearest to you, give a good strong kick so my torso is centered over the cockpit.  Then turn myself over and swing my legs around into the foot-wells in one smooth motion.  It just takes practice.

If it is your size perhaps a stirrup would help.  Tossed over the far side, get your foot into the stirrup, grab the line as far across the boat as you can (knots in the line help a lot), step down and push up onto the boat.  Your weight on the farside gunwale should keep the boat from flipping over toward you.  Any kind of self-rescue takes some practice. 

Good to know you can get back on over bow or stern.
