Has anyone fished Point Roberts, USA?    48° 59.023'N 123° 3.025'W

Point Roberts is a small rectangular peninsula forming the western extent of Boundary Bay, BC.  It sticks out southward into Puget Sound from the Greater Vancouver, BC Area.  The southernmost 2 miles is in the USA, so to get there by land you must go through Canada.  Nice public boat launch on the SW tip perfect for access to returning Frasier River salmon with a WA Fishing license.

I did once, with no luck.  I have been meaning to get up there again, but have had a hard time getting info about it.  I called the marina yesterday and all they said was "fishing is hit or miss".  Supposedly it's very good for coho in the fall.  And why not...it's near the mouth of the fraser.

I always wondered what the protocol is if you paddled over from Birch Bay?

Do you declare yourself when you land, or by radio when you cross the border?

White Rock used to be a party Mecca in the summer, don't know if hoser hotties still flock there or not.

Birch Bay = good crabbing!

I guess that depends somewhat on how the determine the terrortial waters boundaries.  If you launch at Birch Bay and land at Point Roberts there's no need to declare anything as you departed USA and arrived in the USA.  It's a weird little piece of non-contiguous American land.

Also wonder if they do the reciprocity deal like OR and WA, or if you are fishing on the Canadian side of the line do you need a Canuck license.

I've known a few guys that fish near the Canuckian maritime boarders.  They will check you if you're in Canuck waters and you will get a big fine if you don't have all the licenses and other requirements.  Better have a really good GPS system if you're anywhere near the lines and don't have their paperwork.

I went to point roberts today. It was a pain. You have to cross the border twice, each way. Paddling from blaine isn't an option. It's 15 miles.

Anyway, didn't get any salmon. Fished the point itself. Marked alot of bait and fish. Did get a couple cutts. What I really wanted to do was crab. Opening day for MA7N. There were alot of people crabbing. Dozens of buoys. Soaked my traps for a good 5 hours. Not a single crab in either. That's a first.

I wouldn't go back to point roberts unless I heard the fishing was red hot.  I am mega bummed about no crabs.

Thanks for checking it out Rory and reporting back. That's not a good sign, that area is usually teeming with dungies.

Dude, thanks for taking one for the team!  Which point did you fish, east or west?  Trolling, mooching, or jigging?  Did you see any shore fishing from the west point?

Bummer on the crab.

Yeah, it had been on my mind lately.  I was driving up to birch bay yesterday and decided to keep right on going to the border.  I have the nexus pass, which makes border crossings relatively easy.  without that I think there would have been a good 30-45m wait at each border.  Kind of made me wonder what the legality of transporting crabs or fish over two borders is.  Do you have to declare it?  I would guess you do.  Seems like megahassle.  Hassle that I didn't have to deal with because I was bringing back NOTHING.

I fished the western point.  That's where all the fishing happens.  It did look promising.  Lot of bait on the finder and they'd occasionally bust the surface.  tried mooching, jigging and trolling a konezone flasher with a herring in a helmet (small cutt hit this).  Also tried casting a buzz bomb and a kastmaster (a decent sized cutt hit this).  I basically tried everything.  There were a few jumpers but they were probably shakers or cutts.

I saw only two shore anglers.  In this spot there is likely a direct correlation between the number of shore fisherman and presence of coho.  Seems to support that idea that it's too early for the silvers.  Last time I was here (in a PB) the shore was lined with anglers.

(if any admin reads this - can you move this thread to reports?)

I've been too busy this year to do much fishing...however i drive to Point Roberts about once a week.  I keep meaning to take my kayak but always ends up a work trip.  I have fished PR many times in a PB.  Best salmon fishing is usually at the opener and typically sept...i caught 13 salmon on a labor day weekend a few years ago.  And yes, the millions of salmon that hit the frasier pass right by The Point.  I have seen many salmon caught in commercial boats out there.  best crabbing would be along Lily Point beach.  the border is a hassle but if you time the trip right...no wait...there is a county park there and i keep promise/threaten my family we are going to stay there a long weekend and spend the entire weekend on the beach and kayaking.  One other kewl note...many times the Orcas swim withing a few hundred feet off the beach and i know locals who have paddled with them...of course fishing is done for the day at that point as the salmon are running for their lives.
