I notice that the gull of my yak is pretty scratched up. It there some things that I can do to smooth it out? Or is that unnecessary and a waste of time?

There are tapes you can apply to the stern skeg and keel.  There are automotive, marine, and aviation products.  They are all some sort of off-the-shelf tape manufactured by 3M or Dupont or xxx, and if one could find the generic versions they would be  MUCH cheaper.

Car trim restorer works on the small scratches but a heat gun. Slightly warming the pastic could get out some of the bigger scratches.

You had an encounter with a gull, too? We should go in on an eBay lot of replacement lures, then.

yes

+1  as long as the boat is not leaking, the only ones looking at the bottom of your boat are the fish that you are reeling up!
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."
