How ya'll are!?
I finally bit the bullet and bought a vhf radio. Found this package at Radio Shack; Midland Nautico in a value package that includes the (small and light weight) 5 watt radio, recharheable battery pack, AC charger, DC charger, earbud and mic. for the hands free feature of voice activated use, storage base and a funky inadequate dry bag for the unit. I threw the dry bag away and got a better design. All this for $99.99.
With the proper care I hope to get many years from this radio. Which brings me to the subject of applying di-electric grease to the access ports, is this something I should do?
 Thanks

Doh! You are gona hate this box, but you can pick up that same radio kit at the midland website for about $68. I picked one up here at the local sporting good store for $59.99. I haven't had it on the water yet. What other dry bag did you get for it.

Dielectric grease is your friend for any connection that has the possibility of getting wet, expecially salt water wet.

BAD BOX !!??
what are the reasons you do not like this radio?
The only time I will use it is when I'm on the water, and I don't want to be surprised if I'm in need!
The price thing is something we deal with in our small area, we have the same UPS designation as the Alaskan coast. To pick it up at a large box store would require a 2 1/2 drive through the mountains at a substantial cost in fuel and time. If I can't save over a hundred bucks on any item, I will buy local and support my neighbor.
Other than the cost, does it get poor reception? falls apart? What should I be ready for?
Thanks for the heads up FLOATIN. I'm off to get some grease tomorrow.

I have not had it on the water yet, but it seems to be ok. I just got mine about a month ago. I haven't been on any water since I have a little ear trouble going on, (I had my ear drum lanced to drain some fluid out of my big ass head) I did use  the weather channel on it though one night sitting on the poarch while haveing myself a libation ;D I figure it has to be better then nothing.

FLOATIN,
I chose this one over the more costly units for the simple reason it's going on the water and you know how the ocean likes to eat gear. Also like the single on-off knob and the rest of the controls are push button so I can work the radio inside the dry bag ( DRY-PAC brand).
Possibly take it mushrooming this winter as well but the rain is no problem. The only concern there is it's only good for flat or line of sight transmission and recieving.
If it only lasts one season it will be a season with a little insurance in my pocket!
PS I know ear trouble, 30% deaf in the upper range (wifes voice) and wearing appliances in my head for about a year now, and I wouldn't go a day without 'em. Except I do not wear them on the water, at $1400.00 each I try to remember to remove them.
