I would like to weigh my fish. Why?  Because I am tired of people saying, "That is a 30 pound fish you caught there", when I don't think it weighs that... So, my question is this.  Do those cheap $5 scales give a decent reading on the weight of the fish.  I am not looking for precision, but it should be correct within a few pounds.

I'd recommend picking up a digital scale.  You can often find them on sale and provided you keep it dry (DAMHIK ::)) and full of fresh batteries it will last you a long time.

The digital scales are really good.  For example, Rapala makes one for about $20 that weighs fish up to 50 lbs and is good to +/- an ounce or so.   As for a $5 scale, I'm not sure I've seen many of those.  I'm guessing they're the old spring models.  They should work just fine, but you might want to calibrate it yourself with known weights.

Are you thinking of one of these? I have one and have compared it to my digital. They're pretty close.

$5.49

I got one and it works well, sure digital scales might be more accurate but for 5 bucks its a good product and will weigh yer fish!

Or just say you weighed it even if you didn't.  The same people that would have called out your estimate are still going to call out the (in)accuracy of whatever scale you use.

I think I've only ever questioned one weight ... ever!  Somehow handlines make fish heavier.   >:D

Hmmm... This feels like a reference to the fabled nanook.  Yes?
