I'm new on the kayak fishing scene and am wondering where to go. I live in Shoreline and have only been out bass/trout fishing on Lake Ballinger...but my PFD just showed up in the mail, got my anchor and my milk crate, so after a little tidal research I think I'm ready to head out.  :-\

Anybody have an easy, as far as access and paddling, place to fish/crab starting from Edmonds/Everett. And what could I expect to catch?

I'm also curious about Lake Washington, any hot spots for kayak fishing there?

The newer park in Edmonds, south of the marina, would be a good place to start. Quick access to deep water, here, good for salmon fishing. Not sure how good it would be for crabbing; not sure I'd want to eat any picked up under an old oil dock.

To the north, check out some of the parks, particularly Picnic Point. Good crabbing (years ago, at least). Good area for humpies, in humpy (odd) years.

Years ago, there use to be good fishing for Pacific true cod, from Edmonds to Mukilteo, in the early spring.

Bottom fishing in this area is slim pickings.

I grew up in Shoreline.  I consider Ballinger my "home waters".  I remember the early summer evenings trolling flies at sunset for planters.  I can still smell that lake in my mind.

From Everett down to Seattle you can only keep silvers except for a couple of "bubble" fisheries, one in Elliott Bay and the other in Tulalip where you can keep kings.  The king run should be peaking some time in the next 2 weeks.  I've fished quite a bit from Shilshole all the way up to Edmonds.  From right about now until early Oct should be getting good for the silvers.  The park in Edmonds that Pisco mentioned should be a good launch place.  Or from Golden Gardens out of Shilshole.

There is some crabbing off Shilshole and up by Mukilteo and Picnic point like Pisco said.  You can also catch sole/flounder on most sand bottoms along this stretch of water.

Lake Washington?  Well ... there are a number of fisheries there.  Don't ask me about the sockeyes because they clowned me this week.   ???  There a pretty good cutthroat fishery there that is way underutilized.  They are pretty deep in the summer, but in the fall they should be coming shallower and I'll probably try to target them after the silver season.  Also there is some great yellow perch fishing in the big lake and they should be schooling up and going on a feeding frenzy this fall too.

BTW, what kind of yak do you have?

Hey thanks for the great advice ;D. I think I'm going to give Picnic Point a shot tomorrow, I might try out my crab pot, is chicken good bait?

My yak is a cobra fisherman, it's a 2000 or something like that, I picked it up for 300 bucks. Which, I think was a good deal looking at their website, a new fish & dive is 985.

I obviously need to review my regs again, but what can I keep from Picnic Point? Reading the regs is difficult for me because I don't know where the landmarks are in relation to everything else. If someone could explain to me, as if I was 5 years old, what I can fish for and keep from Picnic Point that'd be great.

Again, thanks for your responses and help with my newbie questions. ;)

I believe Picnic Point is south of Shipwreck so that would put it in MA9.  You may want to confirm this with another source as I don't know 100% for sure.  Page 113 in the regulations spells it out pretty clearly what you can keep and how many in MA9.

Here's a view from Acme Mapper showing the Edmonds-to-Mukilteo  area; Shipwreck is about 1 1/2 miles N. of Picnic Point, about due W. of the south end of Paine Airfield's N-S runway.  http://mapper.acme.com/?lat=48.33902&long=-124.669&scale=14&theme=Topo&width=4&height=3&dot=Yes

Here's some views from WA State's Shoreline photos, showing Shipwreck. You can zoom out for a map, or click south (right side, in this case) to see Picnic Point.  http://apps.ecy.wa.gov/shorephotos/scripts/photosearch.asp?id=SNO0240

BTW, I recommend bookmarking both these sites for future e-scouting trips!!  ;D
