Hi NWKA,
I surfed and kayak fished in Northern California 2006-2010, but haven't been in the water up here since then. Work has finally let-up a bit, and I'm itching to get back in the water. I'm thinking we might have a window this week? I know the big lings come into more shallow water early season.

Pacific city marine forecast:
Thu SW wind to 5 kt. Wind waves 1 ft. W swell 6 ft at 13 seconds. Chance of showers.
Fri N wind 5 to 10 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. W swell 5 ft at 16 seconds.
Sat N wind 5 to 10 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. W swell 8 ft.
Sun N wind 5 to 10 kt. Wind waves 2 ft. W swell 8 ft.

Thurs / Fri looks best, but do you think it would be too much on Saturday? Definitely an early AM launch to beat the wind.

Thanks,
John

IMO Saturday is a bit sketchy, the morning launch would probably be ok but the landing is kinda "iffy"....my favorite saying from a pilot friend of mine is "take off"s are optional, landing is mandatory "...same rules apply for ocean kayak fishing

It depends on your level of experience going through the surf. In my book 6 foot is pretty big and might cause me to think about heading for Depoe instead. Generally a 3-4 foot swell makes for a pretty smooth launch. The secondary swell tomorrow looks pretty nasty though. I usually look at these two.

Lots of conflict in the models right now but no big up-ticks coming.  Definitely worth driving down on Friday to take a look. Saturday is iffy for exposed beaches but may shape up as we get closer.  Depoe should be a good option.

In my book Nor Cal is Shelter Cove up to the Cal/Ore border. I'm in Crescent City and I trolled South Beach last weekend to no avail. The herring were here and the sea lions, seals, and gulls were gorged, so I thought i may find a forage fish following them. Nope, but it was still fun. I put out two crab traps for 24 hours to no avail, but it was still fun. Maybe this weekend....
