Congrats!  I borrowed a $150 K-mart special and proceeded to HAMMER black rockfish and lings at the Ocean Shore Jetty in WA 4 years ago.  Now I am thousands of dollars into it and typing away at work which is never really a good thing...the addiction is real....

Made it to coast around 9:00AM and rounded the head by 10:00AM.  Winds were 5-10 knots from the SW.  Not optimal but I managed to use it to my advantage.  I would paddle upwind and jig for a couple of hundred yards, then paddle a little farther upwind altering my line for the best coverage.

By my second pass I had a nice little Rockfish (I'm not sure if it was a blue or a black).  Several fish later and I was into a decent size ling.  Another pass and I had a nice size cabezon to the yak.  This lasted for about 3hrs before I decided to join my 4y/o for some body surfing and short trips on the kayak.

In the end, I came home with 4 fat rockfish a sunburn and a nice ling.

Above is a quote from my first fishing report on NWKA.  I guess it hooked me real good.....

My first real kayak fishing trip was out at Point Defiance, it was July 9th last year.  I had been piddling around with a small 9 foot SIK the year before and had just bought a SOT, so i was stoked to take it out.  I picked up a few point wilson darts and didnt really know what I was doing, but 15 minutes later I was in the middle of about 30 PB's with a 36 inch native king on my yak.  had to put it back, but i figured if thats all it took it had to be too easy to get another.  Then the madness began.......

My first kayak trip was in a borrowed outback. I was trolling spinners for fall Chinook. I spent 10 hours on the water and didn't catch a single fish. There were only a few caught that day and they were all caught on herring. It was still amazing to be the only kayak among 60+ power boaters. I knew I had to get a kayak after that day. It was about six months later that I got my Outback and I'm totally in love with it. Welcome to the NWKA mi amigo, now tell us about your first trip out!

Great job getting out there! Cool looking boat you got there too, lots of fish mojo coming from Spot also. I think my first time out was up at Harriet Lake, got skunked.

Despite the sunny weather, fishing in your shorts is not really a good idea this time of year. If you ended up in the water with 40ish degree water you'd go hypothermic pretty quick. A cheap pair of waders with a belt and a spray top can go a long in keeping you fairly safe and warm.

I can tell you that it will keep you warm and pretty darn dry, even if it is the beginning of February on the Willamette when you go in the water.

First kayak experience was 2005 in Austin, TX.  I was there on business, but had my family with me.  The days were breaking 100 deg, so we decided to hit the water and rented a tandem(I don't even know what brand).

I had a travel casting rod with me, and proceeded to hook and lose the biggest Largemouth I'd ever seen..she was 8lbs+ or nothing.  A bit later I caught a new PB at the time of 21", and about 5 lbs.  The family Christmas gift that year was a Cobra Triple package.

I've caught my biggest smallmouth and largemouth fishing from our Cobra. Kayak fishing is AWESOME!!! ;D

Yup, another fisherman hooked;)

My first time was about 6 years ago on a self-guided tour in the San Jauns with my then 13 year old sun, this was his sort of Man hood initiation with Dad and it was a great & memorable trip, 3 days 2 nights good weather.  Caught a bunch of little ling and a few quilbacks & coppers, I think there was a one fish retention then so we barbequed a couple of rockfish.
