Box,

Yeah, I'm right there with you.  I too wear a Mustang rip-cord inflated PFD and I'm LOVIN' it.  I'm probably going to buy another one this spring so I can loan it to guests that come out with me.  I have a nice Kokatat that I normally loan to those guests, but I think it's about time that I give them the same choices that I have.

I think that the main thing that people normally bring up about the manual inflated PFD's is that you won't float if you are knocked unconcious.  By my estimation (I admit that I'm close to fabricating my own statics when I say this), I'm guessing that you are nearly as likely to get knocked unconcious while kayak fishing as you are to be hit by lightning during that same outing.

If I were white water kayaking, then I'd want to throw on the Kokatat.  And even then it's a PFD... NOT a life preserver.  There's a difference.  A life preserver is supposed to float you face up and hold your head above water.  Only those big horse collar vest will do that as I understand it.

Okay, somebody tell me about surf launches and landings!

The lunches are much easier than the landings.........  :D

All,

When I mentioned the surf, I was referring to the chances that you might get hit on the head by your own kayak while launching or landing.  I don't know if anybody got that.  By the way, I'll wear a helmet if I get that worried.

I forgot to mention before that the one draw back that I've found to the Mustang PFD is that there is no knive clip on it.  Does anybody know where I can pick up that little square plastic clip so I can sew it onto my Mustang?  For real, I'm hoping to find one so I can always have a knife right handy.  Just like my hero, Polepole.

Great point FT. This is a really important bit of safety equipment that I think we should all have. There's lots of times a knife that's ready at all times is important. I'll be getting that Solstice someday soon... nice PFD.

I use a divers knife strapped to my calf.

KBH,

The knife kept immediately handy is indeed for cutting caught or tangled lines in an instant if you need to.  It's firmly fastened in a quick release plastic sheath/holster, and they come with blunt points. Basically a short divers knife.  Also of course they're just handy for cutting line, rope, bait, poking at sharks noses  ;) etc..
