I've got a new rod I need to put in the arsenal, thanks to it falling apart from corrosion and use, and I want to move up to a high quality brand rod. I'm really down w/ keeping it local and luckily enough pretty much the baddest in the business are right here. My question, to those who own one or the other, or both, what are you impressions of the brands? Pro's/Cons and any other comments and advice welcome. BTW I'm looking for a salmon/steelhead rod around 8'.
Thanks!

I own both brands and fish both brands.  You can find equivalent rods in both lineups, but I think you should get one of each!!!    >:D

Are you looking for a good general purpose all around rod?  Might I suggest the Loomis HSR1021C GL2.  The GL2 is not super high end but it is a good rod and doesn't cost as much as GL3 or IMX.  I use mine for salmon.  It may be a bit large for steelhead and a bit small for large chinook, but it can work in a pinch in all situations.  It also make a nice rockfish rod for jigs <4 ounces.  It's the rod I reach for most for the types of fishing I do.

I too own both and many grades of each. Both are great rods with great companies behind them. I personally don't use graphite much in a boat, so most of my boat rods are Lamiglas since they make fiberglass rods. Graphite really shines when you need sensitivity or casting distance, 90% of the time in a boat(or kayak) you need neither. I really like Lamiglas Certified Pro Fiberglass rods. The XCF 864 is a salmon machine, good for just about everything you can think of! I also have a Classic Glass CG90DR rod that is nice that I use for saltwater since it is much cheaper than the Cert-Pro rod and we all know how hard saltwater is on gear. The other nice thing about Lami is that you can just drive up to the factory if a rod breaks and get it replaced/repaired. It saves down time. And Lamiglas is still US owned, where as Shimano bought controlling interest in G Loomis if that make a difference to you. Most of my high end graphite rods are for casting(ie, bank) fishing applications. All of them but the G Loomis GLX SASR1002 spinner rod I just bought. My new baby, and the only graphite rod I intend to take in a boat or kayak. ;D
