Oh, that's slick! Nice work Paul! You got me wanting to buy a downrigger now.

I don't have any experience with down riggers on the kayak but my gut says you want it mounted as low to the kayak as possible to lower the center of gravity.

I haven't tried it out yet so I can't speak to how the kayak handles with the downrigger mounted the way it is.

However my setup is not any higher than Zee's setup (first pic) or Lee and Ravokdot's setup (second pic).
Zee is fishing an Adventure and Lee is in a Revo 13, both narrower and less stable than my Outback and they seem to do just fine. If the mounting height proves to be an issue, I can always cut the crate in half horizontally and still use this setup.

I'll post once I have a chance to try it out and let you know.

Looks good to me, as if that means anything!!  Im hoping to get my DR set-up when I get back.  It'll be just in time for salmon season.  Good luck with that and let us know how it works..

That looks like it's pretty far behind your seat.  Can you still reach it to crank it up and down?

Yeah the picture is a bit deceiving on how far back it actually is. That and I have a pretty large wingspan.
If it ends up being too far back when I try it out, I left the strap ends a bit longer than usual so I can tighten the front 2 to bring the crate closer to me, and let more slack off the back 2 to allow the crate to come forward a few inches.

I really like this setup.  I may have to do something similar when I get my DR.

I finally got a chance to try out my downrigger yesterday. I went up to Lake Merwin and found a few Kokanee using this setup. I pulled some footage off of the GoPro of the method I found most effective in kayak downrigger deployment.

That's pretty much how I deployed mine off my revo a few years back. With the AI the rigger is beside me so I can peddle and deploy it and/or cheat and use sail power while i let the rigger down. you're all set up to nail the pinks on the saltvRR!
