Closed sturgeon fishing: Kootenai River

I have read with interest the sturgeon thread on the Columbia.
The Kootenai River, in BC, Northern ID, and NW MT is one of the uppermost major tributaries of the Columbia River.
We were able to C&R sturgeon on the Kootenai in Northern ID near Bonners Ferry until the IF&G ''designated'' them in '94!
Was a fun fishery and 30 minute drive from home.
Largest I caught went over 68 inches. Most in the system looked like they were from the same redd and all tagged.
Lots of work and focus on this fish/river/dam in the past 15+ years without angler access.
It was a fun fishery.
Low pressure as the Kootenai is very 'rural'. Just a few local guys.
One had to get a 'permit' from the IF&G to fish for 'em years back.
This is just a step when 'designated species' is involved.
I have watched as the IF&G systematically shut down this fishery.
I certainly have no opinions or expertise as for the remedy of the fishery.
I feel it is a complex situation.
As an angler; I miss this fishery. It is a real 'blow' when a favored fishery gets closed.
I have eaten sturgeon from coastal rivers in Humboldt Co and from the Columbia at Astoria.
Nice white meat.
At least y'all can target sturgeon and feel their pull!
They jump and run very hard and are easy to release.
