Wali doesn't think I go fishing, so this report is for him.

33" lingcod caught at the mile buoy off Santa Cruz, CA on whole dead squid.  I was fishing for CAlibuts when this bugger bit.  It didn't have the shakey head shakes of your typical ling, but didn't quite have the thumping head shakes of a butt.  I knew it was a decent fish when I was reeling in, but wasn't convinced it was a CAlibut, and refused to believe it was a ling (lings this size are a bit rare in this area).  It was also a good species day catching vermillion, blacks, blues, olives, browns, coppers, and a couple canaries.

The CAlibut bite isn't quite on yet, although another kayak angler got a 22 pounder this morning. The water is still on the cold side (55-56) and there is no real hard bait (anchovies or sardines) in the area.  The water temps just need to notch up a couple degrees with a little bit of hard bait showing up, and things will go off.  Until then, I'll keep trying ...

This fish looked a lot bigger when I first saw deep color.  Its head is proportionately large compared to its body size.

Nice fish, Allen! I'll pop another $20 into the Wali fund. I've sure we can find Wali a spare boat and I'd be happy to drive it out there for him.

I hit Santa Cruz again this morning, still looking for a CAlibut.  But it was not to be.  Still, had a good species count day on small schoolie rockfish.

I'm going to be in San Jose third week of Sep to put the wife pn a plane and I figured I might try Santa cruz for the week she'll be gone . Will that be a good time for that water? I'll be bri ging the AI and will be open to any trips that ya'll recommend at that time. . Our plans are to head north upon her return and fish our up the coast, while camping probably as far as roy's fishing hole . As it gets closet I'll be looking for some help , but ya'll could give me some teasers to get the blood flowing in anticipation of this trip. Thanx for your help , Art

September in Santa Cruz is one of the best times to fish.  The weather is generally good.  Last year we had good runs of halibut, white seabass, and salmon going on in Sept.
